UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN O. R. WINKELMgN OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
COLLAR.
Application and 1111125, 1925. Serial No. 49,000.
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of whichv the followmg is a specification.
This invention relates to collars.
It is well understood that many persons have necks which are unduly enlarged making the wearing of; the usual type of collar uncomfortable and frequently preventing the closing of the neck band of the shirt. For instance, a man may havea goiter so that he cannot button the neck band of his shirt.
One important object of this invention is to provide an improved form of collar which, while appearing like the ordinary collar, may be Worn with a shirt having the neck band open.
Again, the neck under such conditions is often sensitive. s
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved collar wherein no buttons will contact with the skin of the neck.
With the above and other objects in "view as will be hereinafter apparent, the 1nvention consists in general of certainnoveldetails of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically. claimed.
vIn the accompanying drawingslike characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and: g
Figure 1 ista front view'of the pper part of a shirt showing the improved collar attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a view showing the inner face of the collar in fiat position.
Figure 3 is a front view of the upper portion of a shirt arranged to receive this collar, the collar being removed.
Figure 4 is a .vertical section through the collar.
. In carrying out this invention there is provided a collar of the usual turn down type having a body 10 and band 11. At each end of the band is rovided a button hole 12 as in ordinary co lars but the collar differs from that commonl used in that the band is intended to fit inside theneck band of the shirt. To that end the band is pro- I I vided, on the side which lies next the body in folded position, with a seriesyof tabs 13 sewed thereon and each having a button hole 14 for the reception of the base of an ordi-- v nary collar button. One of these tabs is 'secured at the back center while the others are secured in spaced relation to the ends. Thus the collar has five button holes instead of the usual three.
The shirt may be made with a special band 15 to correspond to the collar size and provided with a ack button hole 16, front button holes 17 and side button holes18 cor L responding in in the collar.
In securing the collar to the shirt buttons position to the button holes are passed through the button holes 14 and I through the button holes 16 and 18. Then a single button maybe passed through the holes 12 and 17. 1
The collar may be worn with an ordinary" shirt by opening the collar band and securingthe ends of the band by collar buttons to the lateral tabs 13, the ends of the collar be ing allowed to come down in front of the gap in the shirt and being secured together by a collar button.
Thus an abnormall large collar may be .worn Without marke ly destroying the appearance of the shirt.
There has thus been rovided a simple and efiicient device of tie kind described HERMAN o. n. wrnKELMAN.
