Be it known that I, CHARLES BLAMFIELD, a subject of the King-of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of- Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, h. ve invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire Lighters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact speci fication.
The object of this invention is the construction of an improved means for lgnlting fires in stoves at a predetermmed hour.
In the construction of the same, I providetwo relatively sliding members, one holding the igniting element, as a match, and supported in close proximity to the combustible material to be ignited; and the other carry ing a suitable friction surface designed to be drawn over the match by an elastic element, but held from such action by a stop adapted to be very slowly weakened until it is forced to release the sliding member and to permit its friction surface to ignite the match and set fire to the combustible material.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Fig. lis a side view of a fire lighter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 1s a side sectional view of the same showing the parts set for its igniting operation. Fig. 3 is a topview of a portion of the stationary member. Fig. t is across section at 4- L in Fig. 2.
The device as illustrated in the drawings is about full size and is mainly constructed of wood for the sake of economy. The
stationary member '1 has its end designed to be nearest the fire sheathed with sheet metal 2, and provided with an anchoring device 3 consisting of a pin which can be stuck into any piece of wood at hand. Immediately back of this sheath 2 is a vertical hole t into which the match is to be placed, leaving only its head 5 exposed.
Slidable upon the member 1 is the member 6 which is retained thereon by means of an elastic band 7 having an anti-friction shoe 9 between it and the under surface of the stick 1. The fire-endof the member or stick.

For thus moving the sliding member 6, I provide an elastic band 12 attached to the shoulder 13 of the same, and united atits ing member being held in the position shown in Fig. 2 and the elastic band 12 pulled andpressed into the slot 15, a sudden release of the member 6 will speed the surface 11 over the match and ignite it.
To provide a stop for the member 6 which will thus release it at any predetermined The slidtime, the member 1 is formed with a notch 16 into which is placed a slowly soluble or softening tab 17 and at the rear of the mem her 6 is a small chamber 19 formed by cutting away a portion of the stick 6 and fasten- 'ing a sheet metal pocket 20 about it, leaving a narrow slot 21 to receive the tab 17; filling it with fibrous material or pieces of sponge 22, and covering it with a rubber flap 23 attached at 24 to the stick.
A liquid being introduced into the cup or chamber 19 until the sponge or fibrous 'mate'rial therein is saturated, the moisture therefrom will very slowly creep down and be absorbed by the tab 17 until the latter has become soft enough to release the sliding member 6.
When the match is ignited the movable member 6 has retreated toward the left entirely away therefrom, so that the "flame can rise from the matchand set fire to the combustible -material suspended from the kindlings above it.
When setting the lighter, the burned match is withdrawn and a fresh portion of one inserted in the hole 4; and the member is pulled slightly away from the member 1 to permit it to be passed over the matchhead; the elastic band 7 readily allows this. Then a fresh tab is inserted in the notch 16, and the rubber band 12 is stretched out into engagement with the slot 15.
Thesetabs may be composed of rosin and soda, or sugar; but I prefer fiber, either wood pulp or straw, impregnated with starch or gelatine, and treated with resin or the like.
