Abstract
426,746. Lighting - attachments for cigarettes and tobacco pipes. NARAYAN, K., 66, The Mall, Meerut, India. Jan. 11, 1934, No. 1062. [Class 130] [See also Group XII] A device for igniting tobacco in cigarettes and tobacco pipes comprises an ignitible body, arranged adjacent to or in contact with the tobacco, and a cord arranged partly within the ignitible body or the tobacco, the cord being prepared with an abrasive substance so that it effects ignition on being drawn through the ignitible body and into contact with an igniting agent. As applied to a cigarette, Fig. 1, the device comprises a disc 2 and a cap 3 arranged to provide a cavity 4 for the cord 5, which can be drawn through an aperture 6 in the cap 3. The cap is normally closed by a thin sealing disc of paper &c. to prevent accidental withdrawal of the cord. The device may be retained on the cigarette by means such as a collar secured by adhesive and a pin 8 or a wire frame &c. The disc 2 may be composed of potassium chlorate and charcoal, with a little burnt ash if desired. The cap 3 is made of the same material, or of paper or the like. The disc 2 may alternatively be formed of paper pulp, blotting paper, or cardboard, treated with potassium chlorate, with or without antimony sulphide, or other chemicals. The inner surface of the recess 4 is coated with a fulminating mixture comprising potassium chlorate, antimony sulphide, red lead and potassium dichromate; and the inner end of the aperture 6 is provided with a small quantity of an igniting agent such as red phosphorus with or without potassium chlorate. In modifications, (1) the parts 2, 3, are formed as inter-fitting cups ; (2) the part 2 is placed in powder form on the end of the tobacco in the cigarette, and is formed with a concave recess for the cord and held in shape by a paper disc ; (3) the members 2, 3 consist of concave discs of paper prepared as described above, with a recess such as 4 between them ; (4) the cord 5 lies in a recess 14, Fig. 7, formed by a paper pocket 15 in the tobacco of the cigarette, which is provided at the end with an ignitible disc or powder 16, having a central aperture 17 lined at 18 with fulminating material and an igniting agent, and with an apertured disc 19 and a paper sealing disc 7. In further forms, the pocket 15 is omitted, the thread 5 lying in the tobacco of the cigarette or along the inner wall of the cigarette wrapper, and being drawn through an inclined, straight or curved aperture in a disc such as 16. A knotted thread may be tied around the thread 5 to cause friction on drawing the thread through a straight aperture. In a modification shown in Figs. 11 and 12, the device comprises a pair of discs 25, 26 provided with oppositely arranged slots 27, 28 and with an igniting agent 29 at the inner end of each slot ; the discs may be pasted together by means of the fulminating material. The device may be made of suitable size for use as an igniter for tobacco pipes. In a further form, Fig. 15, for lighting cigarettes or tobacco in pipes, the device consists of a block 43 moulded from granular coal or other fuel 44 mixed with an ignitible composition and provided with a recess 45 for the cord 5, the recess and the aperture 46 being treated with the fulminating and igniting material as above described.
