H. E. PIEH I COTTER PIN FULLER Filed March 27 1925 Wff Q Patented Mar. 16, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY ERNEST PIEH, OF WILLISTON, NORTH DAKOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO GEORGE H. PIEI-I AND ONE-FOURTH TO LILLIAN M. PIEH, BOTH OF MINNE- APOLIS, MINNESOTA.
COTTER-IIN FULLER.
Application filed March 27, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ERNEST PIEH, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilliston, in the county of Williams and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gotter-Pin Pullers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and highly efficient cotter pin puller, and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the clann.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved cotter pin puller;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the cotter pin puller; 1
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 38 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 4 indicates a pair of jaws pivotally connected at 5 and having handles 6'by which said jaws are operated. Integrally formed with the outer ends of the jaws 4 is a laterally projecting relatively sharp bill 7. The inner face of the hill 7 extends at right angles to the jaws 4 and its outer face extends obliquely from the point of the bill to the outer ends of said jaws The inner faces of the jaws 4 and the hill 7 are recessed at 8 to leave co-acting relatively sharp clamping edges 9. The back of the jaws 4 in respect to the bill 7 is transversely curved to afford a rocking fulcrum 10 and the ends of said jaws are rounded longitudinally in respect thereto to afford a Serial No. 18,744.
rocking fulcrum 11 that extends at right angles to the rocking fulcrum 10. The outer face of the bill 7 is transversely rounded to afford a rocking fulcrum 12 that extends obliquely in respect to the rocking fulcrum 11. The clamping edges 9 diverge from the points of the bill sectlons and then continue along the ends and sides of the jaws 4 to a distance more than half the length of said aws.
The inner faces of the jaws 4, inward of the clamping edges 9, are further recessed at 13 and provided with co-acting cutting edges 14.
A cotter pin may be pulled by engaging the same with the co-acting clamping edges 9 between the rocking fulcrums 10,11 and 12 and then removed by rocking the tool on any one of said fulcrums; or a cotter pin may be engaged by the co-act-ing clampingi edges 9 directly opposite the rocking fulcrums 10, 11 and 12. It is also evident that the tool may be rocked on the outer ends of its jaws 4 or at the junction of the oblique surface of the bill 7 with the outer ends of the jaws 4. The point of the bill 7 may be inserted into the eye of a cotter pin to pull the same. Many other movements of the cotter pin puller are possible to pull av cotter pin.
WVhat I claim is:
A cotter pin puller comprising a pair of handle-equipped pivotally connected jaws having at their outer end; a laterally projecting relatively sharp bill, the inner faces of the jaws and bill being recessed to leave contacting relatively sharp marginal clamping edges, certain of which extend parallel to the plane in which the opening and closing movements of the jaws take place and certain others of which extend transversely thereof.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
HENRY ERNEST PIEH.
