GEORGE BEsANooN, OF WILKES BARR E, PENNSYLVANIA.
CO'DTER-PIN EXTRACTING PLIERS'.
Application filed November 4, I926; Serial No. 146.214;
This invention relates to improvem nts In pliers, adapted for use in extracting cotter-pins. I a
. 7 object oft-he invention resides pro vid ing a air of pliers having opposed pivotally connected gripping jaws with terminal studs formed at the free ends of the jaws and at one side thereof projecting toward each other inopposed relation for coopera beveled faces adjacent said studs which may be formed with a minimum of machineoperation so that a tool will be provided which will efficiently perform the operations for which it is designed. I
The invention comprehends numerous other objects which reside in the specific construction and relation of the parts as more particularly pointed out in the fol lowing detailed description and in the claim directed to the preferred form of the invention, it being understood however; that various changes in the size shape and arrangementeof the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope'of the invention as herein set forth.
In the drawings forming part of this application: 1 V V Fig. 1 is a plan view of the improved pliers formed with the cotter-pin engaging stud Fig. 2 is a side view thereof illustrating one manner of using the pliers in extracting a cotter-pin, and I Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view showing one of the jaw faces to illustrate the detail of how the cotter-pin extracting stud is formed on the end portion thereof.
These cotter-pin extracting pliers include a pair of jaw members 1 and 2 respectively, formed in opposed relation and pivotally connected at one end by the pivot pin 3 in any usual and desired manner of constructa the body of the jw's so as to provlde a plurality of fuling pliers, as well known in the art,v and 'which a'r'e formed with handle extensions 4 bywhich the jaws are moved on the-pivot 3. -These jaws 1 and 2 are formed-in op-. posed relation I and. are: substantially rectangularincross-section, being formed how- 'ever',with cutaway, portions 5 in opposed relation and in one side adjacent the pivot to provide the wire cutters 6 operating in the movement of the jaws toward each other or in any well-known manner:
Beyond the recesses 5 these jaws are formed with serrated or corrugated gripping faces 7. Beyond the gripping faces 7 the jaws are formed with recessed portions 8 in the opposite faces which increase in depth toward the free ends thereof" and terminate with the cotter pin engaging studs The free ends of these cotter-pin engaging studs terminate in the same plane as the gripping faces 7 of the jaws, and studs 9 V on each side of the jaws 1 and 2 projecting toward each other in opposed relation as illustrated in" Fig. 1. 7
These studs 9 are formed so that they are at onesideof the longitudinal plane of the pliers shown as in Fig. 2, while the end portions of each of the jaws 1 and 2 are formed with substantially long beveled faces 10 in place of the usual squaredends. The ends of both jaws 1 and 2 are provided with the beveled faces 11 which extend from the ends of the jaws adjacent the inner opposed. faces rearwardly to the outer faces thereof, while the outer side edges at opposite sides of the jaws are provided with the corner bevels 13. 7
Particular attention is directed to the fact that these beveled faces all converge toward the studs 9. With the studs 9 in cooperating relation in the closed position of. the jaws as shown in Figs. 11 and 2, it will be seen that the stud positioned at one side of the jaws as illustrated in Fig. 2 with all of the beveled faces converging toward the studs 9, a construction is provided whereby the ends of the jaws formed with the studs may be readily inserted into restricted pocket recesses in motor vehicle motors and the like, for engagement with eyes of cotterin the eye of the cotter-pin and thrufa ratching motion of the pliers after engagement with the eye on the faces, 10, 11, or 13, may.
, angular end portions 10 of the pliers 1 and 2 which terminate and provide beveled ends of a shorter length than the other beveled surfaces on the aws provide a most effective fulcrum in the extraction of cotter-pins, and fOIJIlOSl) purposes will be used as the fulcrum face in the extraction'of the cotterpins, while the other beveled faces provide special fulcrums to permit rocking of the tool for removing the cotter-pins where the size and dimensions of the object in which the cotter-pin is mounted limits the position of the pliers when engaged with the pin so that it is necessary for extracting purposes 25 to use other of the beveled faces. 7
The formation of the studs 9 by recessing the jaws in their opposed faces as indicated at 8 provides a substantially strong structure which will withstand the maximum amount of wear and yet operate in a highly efficient manner the ends of the studs 9 terminating in the same plane as the face 7, permitting the ordinary use of the pliers for gripping or wire-cutting purposes in the usual and well-known manner.
It will thus be apparent that ahighly novel plier construction has been provided which incorporates the provision of a pair of cotter-pin engaging studs adapted in themoperation of the jaws for engaging in the eye of the cotter-pin so that a fulcrum movement may be obtained on any one of a plurality of beveled faces on the; jaws and, considerable leverage obtained by operating the pliers in any one of a plurality of directions for efiiciently removing the cotter-pins from a bolt or other means to which it is secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:-
Cotter-pin extracting pliers, comprising a pair of jaw members of substantially rectangular cross-section pivotally connected at one end and formed with handle extensions,
the opposite. ends of said jaws having op-' posed gripping faces terminating in recesses formed in the'jaws, the extremltiesof sald jaws having studs formed thereon at one.
side extending inopposed alined relation and terminating substantially in the plane of the gripping faces, the ends, sides, and corners of said jaws being formed with angularly arranged beveled faces converging toward the studs and forming a plurality of fulcrum faces. 7
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GEORGE BESANCON.
