NATALE SALVUGCI, or nnrnoir, ivrrcnrsa'n, nssren'on or ONE-HALF TO'JOHN w.

WRENCH.
Application filed September 26, 1924, Serial No. 740,067. Renewed July 24, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. NATALn SAINUCCI, a citizen of the United States residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in .Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and contemplates a structure including a fixed jaw, and a self adjusting movable jaw, the latter being normally held substantially in spaced parallel relation with the fixed jaw and movable into gripping relation with the fixed jaw when pressure is applied to the handle of the wrench.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
in the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a plan View of the wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view taken at a right angle to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view showing the movable aw in its normal position and partly in section.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the i'novable aw in its active position. I
Figure 5 is a view of a modified form.
llcfcrringcto the drawing in detail and particularly to Figure 1., 10 indicates the handle of the wrench which is formed at its opposite ends with fixed jaws 11 and 12 re spectively. For each fixed jaw there is pro vided a movable jaw 13, and this jaw "is formed with an offset bifurcated extension 14: designed to straddle the handle 10. It will be noted that the jaws 11 and 13 are used together, and their adjacent faces are roughened or serrated as at 15, inasmuch as this end of the wrench is adapted to be used as a pipe wrench, while the jaws 12 and 13 are used with nuts, bolts and the like, their adjacent faces being preferably smooth. The jaws of each pair are connected by links 16 which are pivotally associated with said jaws, to allow the movable jaw to automatically assume. gripping relation with the fixed jaw when pressure is applied to the handle. The bifurcated extension is formed with slots 17 which are inclined as shown, and arranged in each slot is a pin 18 projecting from the handle 10. By reason of this construction, it will be manifest that when the handle is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figure 4:, irrespective of which end of the wrench is used, the pin 18' residing along the inclined slot 17 will force the movable jaw 13 into gripping relation with the fixed jaw in the manner illustrated in Figure 4. As shown in Figure 3 each movable jaw 13 is provided with a leaf spring 19, one end of which is secured to said jaw, and the free end of which bears against the. adjacent edge of the handle 10. This spring functions to normally hold the jaws in spaced parallel relation as shown in Figure 3, and to return the jaw to this position after pressure has been released from the handle 10.
The wrench shown in Figure 5 is of the same construction as the wrench hereinabove described, except that the handle 10' is formed with jaws only at one end thereof. The fixed jaw is indicated at 12 and the movable jaw at 13. These jaws are connected together by links 16, while the movable jaw 13 is formed with a bifurcated extension l l slotted as at 17 to receive the pin 18. The wrench just described is used in the same manner as the wrench shown in Figure 1.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily'apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as ,fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is:
A wrench including a handle, a fixed jaw projecting from one end thereof, a movable jaw spaced from the fixed jaw, links arranged at both sides of the wrench and having their terminals pivotally connected with both the fixed and movable jaws, a leaf, spring interposed between the handle and the adjacent side of the movable jaw, and
utilized to normally hold the movable jaw slots, whereby the movable jaw is forced parallel witlrthe fixedj-am aipairof spaced forwardly in advance of the fixed jaw into obliquely disposed extensions "projecting[grippingrelation when pressure is'applied 10 from one end of the movable jaw and slidto the handle.
ably embracing said handle said extensions In testimony whereof I aflix my signahaving incli'ne'delet's,"and ajpinjproje'cting 't'ure. v v. through the handle and received by "said NATALE SALVUCCI.
