Be it known that I, ALFRED LENORMAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco,
State of California, have made a new and useful invention-to wit, Improvements in Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates particularly toa device adapted to be used for pulling and twisting the reinforcing wires used in cribbings, molds and other .reinforced concrete construction forms.
An object of the invention is to provide a tongs, .or pincers, provided withjaws for gripping the loose ends of a reinforcing wire, and;with a cam member by means of which the operator may apply a pulling pressure to the said wires.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wire pulling tongs having adjustable jaws thereon that will be superior in point of simplicity, inexpensiveness of construction, positiveness of operation, and facility and convenience in use and general efficiency.
Other objects and advantages will appear as this description progresses.
In this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is illustrated in the form considered to be the best, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such form, because it maybe embodied in other forms, and it is also to be understood that in and by the claims following the description, it is desired to cover the invention in whatsoever form it may be em bodied. In reinforcing concrete construction work the forms or molds, into which concrete is poured, are usually held together in a more one sheet of draw or less stableand permanent manner, yet'so arranged that the, boards of the form or mold may be quickly and easlly taken from the molded concrete after it has hardened.
It is almost a universal practice to utilize wires, tied around the sheathing and studs of the molds, to hold the partstogether. The work of tying the parts-of the mold together by means of the wires is exceedingly difficult and. complicated with the forms of apparatus now employed to attain this end. i
In my invention I haveprovided a tongs, or pincer device, formed of a pair'of complementary handle members 1; and 2,[cross pivoted at 3. The ends 4 and 5 of the tongs, opposite the respective handle portions 1 and 2 are arranged in spaced relationso as to provide a gap therebetween. The end 4 on the handle member 1 terminates as a curved cam 6, for the purposes to be. hereinafter described in detail. On the upper face of the end 4 I provide a jaw member 7 consisting of a flat, bar member extending outwardly on opposite sides of the end 4. The jaw 7 is'pivotally connected to the end 4 by a bolt 8 which allows the said jaw to turn within a limited radius about said end 4.
On the contiguous, inside face of the end 5, of the other handle member 2 I provide a companion jaw 9 pivoted by the bolt 10 to the end 5. The jaw 9 is substantially of the same size as the jaw 7 and is provided with flanged ends 11 and 12 into which the jaw 7 can be received. Each of theopposite ends of the jaws 7 and 9 are loosely connected together by bolts or rivets 13 and 14. The opposite ends of the rivets 13 and 14 are peaned over and sufiicient space provided between the head ends of the bolts 13 and 14 to allow for spreading movement of the respec" tive jaws 7 and 9, when the ends of the said tongs are spreadapart.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the handles separated, which spreads the opposite ends there of proportionately, and in turn the jaws 7 and 9 are opened a distance sufficient to receive the ends of the reinforcing wire 15 therein.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a crude form of concrete mold, consisting of the upright studs 16 and 17 arranged in spaced relation and with the sheathing boards faced along the outside of the stud 17. Thewire 15 is wrapped around the boards, 18 and the ends of the said wire passed around the stud 16 an allowed to protrude therebeyond. The operator, in order to pull the reinforcing wire 15 taut, engages the ends of the said wire with the jaws on the tongs and securely clamps the said ends 'therebetween. Theoperator then bears down on the handle members 1 and 2, exerting suflicient leverage thereon to force the cam member 6 against the face of the stud 16 whichaction pulls the reinforcing wire 15 taut a After the wire 15 has, been pulled as tight as desired, the operator'then rotates the tongs so as to twist the ends 'ofthe wire 15 together to form a knot of sufiicient tightness to hold the sheathing boards 18in a fixed position on the studs.

A device such as described comprising a pair of complementary handle members cross-pivoted together; a jaw member pivotally mounted on the 'end of each of said handle members in co-operating relationship; and fastening means loosely connectingeach of said jaws 2. A device such as described comprising a pair of complementaryhandle members cross-pivoted together; a .jaw member pivotally mounted on the'end of each of said handle members in oe-operating relationship; fastening means loosely connecting each of said jaws; and a cammember formed on'the end of one of said handle members beneath the jaw portion thereon.
3. A device such asdescribed comprising a pair'of complementary handle members cross-pivoted together ;--a curved terminus on the end of one of said handle members; a pair of co-operating jaws pivotally related to each of the ends of said handlemembers, one of said jl-WS having flanged ends thereon to receive the other jaw; and spacing bolts loosely connecting said j aw members.
