warren stares BURT 13. COCI-IRAN, OF CHICAGU, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB T9 GQBLIN MINT COMPANY, OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DISPENSING DEVICE.
Application filed March 14, 1925.
To all rrlzom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BURT B. CociinAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
lily invention relates to improvements in dispensing devices, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a dispensing device of the character described in which novel means is employed for releasing the merchandise, such as candy and the like, from a container.
A further object of my invention is to provide a dispensing device of the character described in. which the merchandise is kept in a normally closed container, thereby assisting in maintaining articles, such as candy and the like, in a fresh condition.
A further object of my invention is to provide a dispensing device of the character described in which the projection of the merchandise therefrom is always assured, and in which means is provided for indicating to the purchaser whether or not the goods are in the container, and, if so, in which con'ipartments.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention ready for actuation, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the mechanism illustrated in Figure 1. V
In carrying out my invention I make use of a base member 1 supported by four legs 2, one at each corner thereof. The base member 1 has a multiplicity of equally spaced apart openings 3. The openings 3 are substantially the shape of a cross sectional contour of the merchandise which is to be held in the dispenser. In the embodiment shown compartments 8.
Serial No. 15,702.
in the drawings the merchandise consists in cylindrical packages of candy 4:, therefore the openings 3 are round and sl ghtly larger in diameter than the diameter of the Passageways 9 extend from the top wall 10 of the body member 5 through the body member and communicate at their innermost ends with the compartments ,8. The
.passages 9 have their axes common with the axes of the compartments'8.
- A cover 11 is mounted upon the body member 5 by means of a hinge 12 disposed at the rearward edges of the cover and body members, and may be closed down upon the body member 0 to close the mouth of the passages 9, thus entirely encasing the merchandise 4: which 1S disposed within the This merchandise is placed within the compartments by hinging the body member 5 upwardly and placing the merchandise therein.
A look, generally indicated in dotted lines at 13, having a keyhole 14;: accessible from the front walls of the body member 5 is provided for locking the body member 5 into engagement with the base member 1, thus the body member 5 is held against unintentional movement out of engagement with the base member 1.
The candy rolls 4; which comprise the merchandise in the present embodiment of the invention, are held against unintentional dislodgment from the compartments by virtue of the'paper 7. If, however, any pressure is brought to bear from above upon the rolls 5 the paper 7 will break and the down so as to break the paper is provided in a punch member 15 having a reduced portion 16 slightly smaller 1n dlameter than the passageways 9. This punch member 15 is secured by means of a flexible chain 1! to the body member 5.
A slotted link 18 is pivotally supported to the edge of the cover 11 and adapted to engage With the body member 5 so as to limit the rearward movement of the cover 11 as shown in Figure 2. This construction is well known, and may be replaced by a cord, if the device is to be constructed cheaply.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood. In order to fill the device the body member 5 is lifted upwardly upon its hinge 6 and the candy rolls a or other suitable merchandise is disposed in the compartments 8. A fresh sheet of tissue paper or thin parchment 7 is placed upon the base member 1 so as to cover all of the openings 3 and the body n'ien'iber is lowered upon the base 1 and the lock 13 made secure.
A customer receiving one of the candy rolls 1 Will take the punch member 15 in his or her hand and force the reduced portion 16 through one of the passagewayst), It is possible to look through the lii'assageways and ascertain which of the compartments 8 are full, since the top of the rolls are plainly visible through the passages.-
As the reduced portion 16 is projected through the passageway 9 and engages with the top of one of the rolls 4 it Will force the roll downwardly to break the thin tissue beneath the roll and the roll will drop,- by
"theretl'iro'ugh mouths of the compartments in said body virtue of its own Weight, through the open ing 3, Where it may be grasped and removed. I t
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a base member, a body member normally resting upon said base member and hingedly mounted thereto, compartments formed in said body member and open at that portion adjacent the base member, said base member having openings in registration With the member, a replaceable fragile closure disposed between said body member and said base member, whereby articles of merchandise may be confined insaid compartments and may be projected from said compartments when said closure is broken, and man ually actuated means for projecting the articles of merchandise through said fragile closure. n g
2. A device of the character described comprising a base member,; a body member normally resting upon said base member and arranged for movement away from said base member, said bodyu'nen 1ber having compartments formed therein and open at that portion adjacent to the base member, said base member having openings therethrough in registration with the mouths of the com-f partments in said body member, a replaceable fragile closure disposed between said body member and said base member, Where, 7
by articles of merchandise maybe confined in said compartments and maybe projected from said compartments When said closure .is broken, and manually actuated means for projecting the articles of merchandise through said fragile closure. 1
