Be it known that I, lWILLIAM A. MINOR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and uscful- Improvements in Deep- Well Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relat-es to deep well pumps and more particularly to the type in which two pistons or buckets are operated in a cylinder through the mediums of rods, one of which is hollow and operates the upper piston or bucket and the other of which extends through the hollow rod for effecting the operationof the lower piston or bucket, the operation of both pistons being effected through a mechanism arranged at the top of the well. An object of this in vention is to prevent the formation in the hollow rod of a column of water which will retard the freemovement of the rods operating the two pistons or buckets. Another object is to eliminate the packing at the lower end of the hollow rod Aand reduce the strain on the packing at the upper end.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of whichwill be hereinafter de scribed: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claim.

Fig. 1 shows in elevation a pump operating mechanism with the upper portion of the pump in fragmentary section;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section through the lower portion of the pump; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of one-half of the pump adjacent the upper bucket or piston.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a pump operating mechanism which may be of any suitable construction, that shown embodying a wellknown construction having two sliding heads lu operated by rotating cams 1b. This operating mechanism is supported on a base 2 which is partially embedded in the ground and from which extends downwardly the outer casing 8 of the pump. Arranged concentrically within this outer casing is the cylinder 4 having the outlet 5 at its upper end and a strainer 6 at its lower end,` this cylinder being formed of a number of seca `tions connected by coupling "Z, the lower section 4a in whichthe pistons operate being of a slightlyv smaller diameter than the other sections, so that the pistons may be readily movedthrough the upper sections and will lit tightly in the lower sections 4a. EX- tending upwardly from the piston 8 through the valve 11 and the cage 14 of the upper bucket is a rod 12 formed of sections with couplings 13 connecting said sections, the upper end of this rod being connected to a slide 1L of the operating mechanism 1 so that a reciprocation of the lower bucket is ef# fected. To the cage 14 of the upper bucket a hollowrod 15 is connected, this hollow rod being formed with sections connected by couplings 16 'and being secured at 17 to the other slide 1b of the pump operatingmechanism 1, whereby the hollow rod 15 is given a recipro'catory motion. A packing 18 is arranged at the upper end of the hollow'rod 15 to prevent the escape of water through the upper end of this hollow rod.
Prior to this invention the hollow rod 15 has been closed to the space in the cylinder 4 about said rod and as a consequence water has leaked into the hollow rod about the rod 12 at the point where said rod passes through the cage 14 of the upper bucket. When this water has accumulated to any Y great eX- `tent, as it will eventually, the couplings 13 on the rod 12 have a plunger action on such accumulatedwater, and, as a consequence, the relative movement of the rods operating two buckets or pistons is interfered with. This has been particularly inconvenient, ras it has required the drawing of the two pistons and the rods in order to eect the re moval ofthe accumulated water in the hollow rod.
These disadvantages are overcome in the present invention by providing the hollow rod 15 and its couplings with openings 4b at different points throughout its length, thereby providing communication between the hollow rod 15 and the chamber in the cylinder 4. By having the hollow rod 15 communicating with the chamber of lthe cylinder 4 above the upper piston, there is a free flowing of the' water from and to the chamber, and, as a consequence, when the rod 12 with the couplings 13 move up and down in the hollow rod 15 the water through the couplings is either drawn into the hollow rod 15 or forced from said rod. This invention does away with the necessity of removing the pistons or buckets with their operating rods after a certain length of time Jfor the purpose of clearing the hollow operating rod of water. Furthermore, the strain on the upper stufng box is reduced to a minimum and the pressure on both strokes is uniform. Operating difiiculties such as rod buckling is eliminated and the necessity of having a packing in the cage 14 of the upper bucket about the rod 12 is done away with as well as the necessity of repairing such packing. kA. greater pumping speed wtih fuller discharge and higher mechanical 20 eliiciency is obtainable.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure l y Letters Patent is:
A deep well pump comprising a cylinder having a discharge at its upper end, two pistons operating in the cylinder, each provided with a valve, and two rods, each connected to one of the pistons, the rod connected to the uppermost piston being' hollow throughout its length and extending to the top of the pump above the discharge opening and having openings at dierent levels communicating with the cylinder below the discharge outlet of the pump and above the uppermost piston to provide a free flow between the interior of the hollon7 rod and the chamber of the cylinder above said uppermost piston to permit a free surging action throughout the length of 'the hollow rod.
