residing atl Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, U. S. A.; have invented certain .new` and useful Improvements in Suction Cleaners, and do hereby declare that the following is a true and correct description of the same.
This invention relates in general to suction cleaners and in particular to that type oflsmall portable machines' in" which provision is made for attaching-a flexible hose whereby tools intended for cleaning places- '15 inaccessible *to the fixed nozzle of the ma` chine may befused. In this connection it is customary to provide some means whereby the flexible hose may be readily attached to Y theproper part of the suction cleaner.v Such .'30 means are usually referred to as converter attachments.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel form of suction cleaner and a novel converter attachment therefor adapted to Si be quickly and accurately attached to the suction cleaner with a minimum of effort. Another object is to provide a suction cleaner and a cnverter therefor' which 'when attached allows the suction'cleaner to restupon the iioor wheels and thus be readily portable.v
A further object is to provide a converterI attachment that may be connecteddirectly to the source of suction of the cleaner and in vwhich the air meets no abrupt corners nor expansion chambers in the air passages before enteringthe fan chamber.
With lthe above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved suction cleaner and converter attachment and the parts and combinations as sctforth in the claims and all equivalents thereof.

`In the drawings, the reference numeral 10 designates the fan .chamber of a suction cleaner which is provided with a discharge conduitv 11 and an intake opening 12. EX-f tending forwardly from the 'fan chamber and cast fintegrally therewith, is-a suction hood-13 the open bottom of which ispartial-ly closed by a removable platell, secured by any convenient means, such as screws and having a front edge 15 forming the rear lip of the suction mouthl. The suction hood is further provided on cach side with forwardly and outwardly flaring walls 17, 17 which together with the rear and side walls form pockets in which the carrier wheels `18, 18 are rotatably mounted.

In 'orderto secure a passageway for the air from the o en rearend ,of .the suction hood to the inta re opening of the fan cham. ber which will be readily removable and at the same time be capable o-f being conveniently and accurately replaced, I `have provided a pulley housing member comprising a flat bottom portion 25, approximatelyv parabolic in sha-pe, the front edge formed in a straight line and adapted to snugly fit the rear edge of plate 14. Extending upwardly and outwardly from the'curved ed e of thebottom portion and lformed integrally theiewith is a side wall 26, the top e'dge of which tits against the bottom wall o the fan chamber and the ends of which fit against the rear walls of the suction hood. This wedge32 'is guided in its lateral movement by a housing 36" secured to the bottom wall of the fan chamber and 'here shown made integrally with the bracket 20. The housin 36 is formed with a channel 37 (see Fig. 6 the sides of which ac t as'guides for the wedge 32, with an elongated slot 38 through which the ringer grip 35 extends, and with a cut away portion 3 9 at the front to receive the extensionBO of the housing member.v
When it is desired 'to attach a flexible hose to the machine so that the tools may be used, the housing member is detached and the' converter attachment illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 is substituted in its place. The converter attachment comprises a substantially hemispherical portion 40 connected with a laterally extending conduit 41 the free end of whichis adapted to receive the end ofl the ordinary iexible hose commonly used with this type. of machine. The upper part a fan chamber and is provided with a liange 42 adapted to fit snugly against the bottom Wall of the fan chamber.
Extending forwardly and flaring outwardly on each side of the hemispherical portion is an arm 43` terminating in a laterally extending ange 44 on which is formed a small pin 45 adapted to'ft in the similarly sha ed depressions in the rear wall of the suction hood. The arms 43 and the hemispherical portion are connected with a flange 46 the front edge of which is straight and fits snugly against the rear edge of the'plate 14.
Extending rearwardly from the ange 42 is an.arm 47 having part of its ends cut away on an angle so as to` form the slopin surface 48 which is ada ted to coact witg old the converter the suction hood.
The rear caster supporting bracket' 20 and the housing 36 are mounted upon a slightly raised portion49 .of the bottom of the fan chamber .10 (see Fig. 8).' This portion 49 Vis provided with an elongated pocket 50 and with a slot 51 which registers with the cut away portion 39 of the housing 86. In
a suction cleaner of the vertical motor type, lit is to be understood that the invention is in noway limited to machines of this type but is of general application.
I claim: l 1. In combination with a suction cleaner comprising a fan chamber having a flat bot-v tom wall with an intake opening therein and a suction hood having vertical rearwalls, of
a, converter attachment comprising a hemispherical portion adapted to register with said intake openmg, a conduit connecting with said. hemispherical portion and outwardly flaring side walls enclosing said' hemispherical portion and having edges contacting with the fiat bottom wall of the fan chamber and with the vertical rear walls of the suction hood.
2. `In combination with comprising a fan chamber having aat bottom wall with an intake opening therein and a suctionl hood having vertical rear walls, of a lconverter attachment com rising a hemispherical portion adapte to register with said intake opening, a conduit connecting with said hemispherical por'- a suction cleaner tion and outwardly flaring side walls enclosing said hemis herical portion and having edges contactlng with the flat bottom wall of the fan chamber and with the vertical rear walls of the suction hood, .and means for clampingV the edges of the outwardly iaring side walls against both the bottom wall of `the fan ch-amber and the rear walls of the' suction hood.

In combination with a suction cleaner comprising a fan chamber having a dat bottom wall with an intake opening therein and a suction hood having vertical rear walls, of a converter attachment "comprising a hemispherical portion adapted to register with said intake opening, a conduit connecting with said hemispherical portion and outwardly flaring side walls enclosingsaid hemispherical lortion and having edgeseontacting. with t e fiat bottom wall of the fan chamber and with the vertical rear walls of the suction hood, and a single securing means for forcing the edges of the side walls againstthe bottom wall yof the .fan chamber and ther'eanwalls lof the suction hood.
4. A converter attachment for suction cleaners comprising a body portion'having a discharge opening, an intake conduit connecting with said body portion, forwardly -and outwardly extending side Walls provided at one end with a projection adapted to be secured to a suction cleaner, and at the other ,end with means to insure proper registry with said suction cleaner.
