G. A. FINDER REED TRIMMER Filed August 2, 1924 'igsi'iazef OFFICE GEORGE A; FINDER, or CHICAGO, rLLrNors, Assresion, BY MEsNE nssrGNiaEiars,-ro Y kFINDER a UEBANEK, rnc., or carolien, immers, A conronarron or' rLLrNoIs.:
REED l marianna.
' Application filed August a, 1924. seriai No. 729,852;
[in exemplilication of my invention is set forth in the accompanying drawing inl the manner following:
Figure 1. is an enlarged plan view of the present trimmer, together with a reed iii- V serted for treatment;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the trimmer;
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section therethrough taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a detail bottom plan of the head end of the device.
The present trimmer is preferably formed from a plate-like body A ofnietal. From one end of the plate is' projected toward the other end a spring tongue 6, the side edges of which are shown as spaced from the proximate edges of the bodyV by intervening longitudinal slots 7. The free end -of the tongue terminates in a curved edge 8 corresponding tothe forni desired for trimming of a reed B. (3o-operating with this edge of the tongue is an edge 9 of the body, of exactly the same contour and closely adjacent thereto. The two curved edges 8 and 9 are adapted to perform a shearing operation upon the reed in a manner which should be perfectly apparent.V f The body end proximate to the cutting edges will'be referred to as the head of the trimmer.' It is preferably rounded and marears 11 disposed upwardly, one through each slot 7. .The forward edge of each ear may abut the corresponding edge of the associated ,slot 7 whereby the reinforcingplate C is ginally reinforced as at 10 by a plate O locked to the body, irrespectiveof any clamping engagement therewith which fis affordedv by its Iiangedmarginal edge. Y
Extending between the,V two ears'll is a pivotpin12. Mounted-for hinge movement l on this pin is a` cam 14 having spaced downwardly depending ears 15 through which the pivot pin is also extended. Between the two inner ears 15 thel camis formed with a concave edge 16 adapted to bear down with' an increasing pressure upon the free end of the tongue. This action is brought about Y by rotating thecam through the medium of ar rearwardly extending handle 17 formed integrally with the cam. If the handle be moved through an arc of degrees,ror
tliereabouts, the cam will force the free end of the tongue into Hush relationship withthe trimmer body, thereby causing the reed end, if positioned as shownin Figs. 1 and 3, to'be sheared. The tongue is preferably offset at 18 in the region of its juncture with the trimmer body, the purpose being to permit Vthe tongue to lie substantially parallel with the body at the moment the shearing operation commences.` This I have found to be very advantageous in that-.it contributes to uniformity in the shearing operations.
It is to be notedthat the present trimmer i comprises but three parts-(1) a: body, withV which is associated an integral tongue,` (2) an ope-rating cam therefor, and a reinforcing plate which strengthens the trimmer head and provides amounting forthe cam. Over long periods of use I have found the present reed trimmer to operate with entire satisfaction, it may beV produced at small expense, and vits size and weight is such that it may be conveniently carried about for usel whenever necessary.
I claim: n I 1. In ay reed trimmer, the combination of lan elongated body having a pair of spaced longitudinalslots between which is extended a spring; tongue connected at one end integrally with the body, a pair of ears extended through the slots adjacent the ends there` of vwhich are remote from the Ytongue-connection with the body, means connecting the two ears havinga clamping engagement'v with one body end, a cutting edge on the body closely adjacent to and'formedin conformity with the edge on the 'free tongue end, and a cam device pivoted between the ies two ears adapted to move the tongue in a manner to perform a shearing operation, substantially as described.
2. A reed trimmer having a sheet metal body formed with a pair of spaced slots between which is a spring tongue connected at one end integrally with the body, the tongue in` the region of such connection being offset whereby 1t normally occupies a plane dierent from that of the body, the body at its opposite end being providedwith a cutting edge adapted to co-operate with the proximate'edg'e on the free end of thegtongue, cam l means for moving the free end of the tongue into a plane which is coincident with that of the body to perform a shearing operation, and a single device which provides a mount- Y ing Yfor the cam and a reinforcement for the cutting end of the trimmer, substantially as described. V
3. A trimmer comprising three parts (l) a body formed with a pair of spaced slots between which is extended a spring tongue connected yat one end "integrally with lthe body, a plate having ra marginal engagementy `with the opposite body end and a pair of ears extended through the slots adjacent the proximate end thereof, whereby the plate is secured immovably to the body, and (3) a cam device pivot-ed between the ears and adapted to bear with pressure upon the free end of the tongue whereby a shearing opera'- tion may be performed', substantially as described.
