A. A. AHL QUIST BUTTON Filed Sept. 5, 1925 F/g/ E A Haj H E Patented Feb. 23, 1926.
ANTDBEW A. AI-ILQUIST, 01E LYNN, MASSiACI-IUSETTS.
, sermon.
Application filed September 3, 1925. Serial No. 54,368.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW A. AIIL UIs'r, citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Lynn, in the'county of Essex and Con'imonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others versed in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved process in making buttons'for ordinaryand ornamental use, and to buttons manufactured from sheet materials.
It has for its objects to provide a new and novel button of attractive appearance; to provide a self-locking construction, practically indestructible; to minimize production costs and manufacturing equipment;
and to provide the various other advantages and results made apparent from the following disclosure.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by utilizing a strip or thong of leather, or other suitable material, preferably pointed at one end and notched at its edges. suitably distanced from the point. for locking purposes. The body of the button is formed by rolling the strip, leaving the pointed end free. A slit is then made through the roll and the free end passed and pulled taut through the slit till the notched edges lock. The button is attached to garments or other desired places by the free end. Attractive variations in form are produced by trimming the roll after the button is shaped, it being possible by such trinnuing to produce a bow or other ornamental effect. By dipping the finished button in a hardening solution, a stiff product may be had or the product may be utilized soft.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference refer to similar parts, Figure 1 shows a strip or thong of leather or other suitable material of preferred shape, from which my device is made. Figure 2 shows the strip illustrated in Figure 1 rolled to form the button, the
roll being slitted. Figure 3 shows the pointed end inserted through and pulled taut in the slit. Figure 4 shows an optional variation of the strip shown in Figure 1. Figure 5 shows the product resulting from the use of the strip shown in Figure i. Referring again to Figure 1, A shows the strip. shows the pointed end thereof. C shows the locking notches. Referring again to Figure 2, D shows the slit passing throughthe rolled strip A. Referring again to Figure 4, A shows the strip and B shows the pointed end thereof. C shows the locking notches. vReferring again; to Figure 5, D shows the slit passing through the rolled strip A I do not desire to confine myself to the details of construction herein set forth, but claim all such variations and equivalents as may well be construed to' fall within the scope of the appended claims:
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America:
1. A method of making buttons, comprising rolling a strip of material upon it self, said roll being slitted, and the free end of said strip passed through said slit to a point where notches on the edges of said strip lock against the edge of the slit next said free end.
2. An article of manufacture formed from a strip of material, notched at its edges and rolled upon itself, said roll being slitted and the free end thereof passed and pulled taut through said slit to a point where said notches lock on the edge of said slit next said free end.
3. ,An article of manufacture formed from a strip of material rolled upon itself, said roll being slitted and the free end thereof passed and pulled taut through saidslit, said free end'being adaptable for fastening purposes.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
