Description

UNITED STATES PATENT DFFIGE.
JOHN H. PITTS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD HIS RIGHT TO ALGERNON S. AUSTEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent LTD-157,4] 7, dated December 1, 1874 application filed June 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. PITTS, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a Whip-Holder, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists essentially of a slip of pliable material to which bristles are fastened, and so arranged that it can be curled round into the form of a socket, and adjusted to any whip-holder, provided with shoulders or projections for catching or holding the same, in such manner that these bristles, by projecting radially inward toward the center of such whip-holder, shall compress, hold, and allow of the easy withdrawal of a whip inserted therein, by reason of the equal pressure eX- erted by them on the stock.
Figure 1 is a-side view of a whip-holder, with adjustablesocket attachment and rest, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1 through the central line. Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the pliable slip of material fitted with bristles, forming the adjustable socket embodying my invention.
WVith reference to the drawing, A A is the barrel, which is made of sheet-iron, wood, or other suitable material, and is slightly tapering in form from top to bottom, the wide end or top being open, and the narrow end partially closed by acurved perforated disk, 0. Two bands, B B, bent to shape, with lugs l l and screws 8 s, secure this whip-holder to the dash-board D of a carriage, buggy, &c., after the ordinary manner adopted with whip-hold ers in general. L L is the socket embodying my invention, andconsists of a long slip of leather, papier-mach, or other pliable material, to which bristles cl d, of any substance having the requisite strength and elasticity, are sewed by wire threads, after the usual manner employed in the manufacture of brushes and such like articles. This slip, fitted with bristles, is curled round so that the ends meet, and thus forms a socket with the bristle ends that are free converging to a center, and leaving a small central hole for the insertion of a whip stock. The socket thus prepared is placed into the neck of the barrel, so as to rest on a shoulder therein provided, or on rivetplugs, which may also catch it at the top and prevent its Withdrawal, so that for all downward and upward pressures of a whip, on its being inserted or withdrawn, it may rest in its original position. rel A A, and resting on. the perforated disk 0, is a hollow piece of cork or wood, 0, fitted to receive the butt-end of a whip-stock, so as to form another bearing to a whip in addition to the bristles of the socket L L.
By this general arrangement of a whipholder a whip, on being inserted and made to press through this elastic medium of bristles till its butt-end touches the bottom adjustable piece 0, is then firmly held in an upright position by the consequent compression of these bristles and sustaining help afforded at the butt by this hollowed-out piece 0.
The advantage, however, claimed is in having this socket L L and piece 0 detachable, so
that they may be removed or replaced at pleasure, and the socket, by being of such simple manufacture and independent of the barrel, renders it capable of being inserted into most kinds of whip-holders.
I do not claim the barrel A A, bands B B, lugs l l, and screws 8 s, as I am aware that these are not new. I also make no claim to bristles attached to the interior of a whipholder for holding a whip, nor to the rest '0, as I am aware that these are not new; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to obtain Letters Patent therefor, is
The slip of material L L, provided with bristles 01, forming an adjustable socket to a whipholder, in combination with a rest, 0, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
JOHN H. PITTS.
