JOHN \VRTGIIT, OF IIOOSICK FALLS, NEW YORK.
WHISK-BROOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,308, dated March 12, 1889.
Annlication filed November 23, 1886. Serial No. 219,667. (No model.)
To ail urhomit our calmer/2T:
Be it known that I, Join \VRIGHT, a eitizen of the l'nited States, residing at lloosiek Falls, in the ounty of Rensslaer, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vhisk Brooms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. i
This invention has relation to improvements in whisk-brooms, and my object is to provide a shield or socket and handle for the same, whereby extra 'li'astenings or cording for the straws thereof are rendered unnecessary, and a finished appearance is given to the broom.
The invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and mrticularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a whisk-broom provided with my improven'ients. Fig. 2 is a like view, the shield and handle being shown in central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a ]')(?lS])O0l;l\(3 of the hamlle-cover and socket formed in one piece and detached from the broom. Fig. 4: is a side elevatirm of a broom provided with the inte ral llllltll(}-(f0\'0l and socket shown in Fig. .5.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
A represents an ordinary whisk-broom, which, as usual, is secured to an inner core or handle, A, by means of coils of wire A Adapted to tit snugly upon the upper portion of the broom is a shield or socket, B, which may be formed either of sheet metal, pulp, leather, paper, celluloid, or other desirable materiz'll. This shield, to facilitate its manulaetnre, may be either struck up by suitable dies or molded, as the nature of the material used may necessitate. If molded or pressed, it preferably made in a single piece without seam. ll desired, the surface may be ornamented by any fancy design, as shown, which may be :lformed by the die or mold. The upper portion of the shield is formed with the ferrule ll, made integral thermviih, and having the shoulder or swell B t represents the handle-co\'er, which, in
this instz'tnee, is formed as a tube. The shield is first placed upon the broom, after l whieh the hamlle-eover is placed in position,
the lower end thereof resting upon the shoulder of the ferrule 13. Adapted to fit upon the top of the core A and bear against the upper end of the handle-cover t is a cap, D, through which and into the core is passed a binding-screw, E, at the outer end of which is a suspension-ring, E.
The parts now being in position upon broom, it will be seen that by turning the binding-screw so as to pass deeper into the core A the cap D will press upon the handleeover C, which in turn will bear upon the shoulder ll of the shield 13, and it (the shield) will bear upon the broom, drawing the several parts and broom snugly into position. The handle mayor may not be provided with a cap. In the latter instance the ring is passed directly through the upper end of the handle cover and core, as indicated in Fig. i. I prefer, however, to make the shield B, ferrule B, and handle-cover C, if molded or pressed, in a single integral piece, and if struck up or stamped out with dies in two halves united along their edges, as shown, each half having the corresponding parts of the shield, ferrule, and handle-cover formed integral thereon.
I am aware that shields have been provided for brooms, and that the halves thereof have been connected to the broom and together by means of belts or screws passing through the halves and the broom, and I therefore do not broadly claim a shield for a broom as of my invention; but,
Having deseribea'l my invention, what I claim is l. The combination, with a broom, of a shield and handle-cover, and of a suspension device connected with the handle-core, and serving to maintain the shield and handleeover in position, substantially as specified.
2. The eombination of the broom i'\,l1aving the core A, the shield 13, having the swell 13*, cover cap I), and suspension device E, seated in the core, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
.l Oi l N \YRI GHT.
