To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Hanni' filtrer-Inni, Konnte, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in theV county of Milwaulree and State of Vlisconsin, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Fountain Pens, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to fountain pens, and particularly to means for refilling the pen with ink.
It is the particular object of this invention to provide a fountain pen distinguished by its simplicity and eiiiciency in operation, whereby the refilling means may be cheaply and durably manufactured, at the same time offering the possibility of quickly refilling the pen.
rlhe invention therefore consists in the novel combination, construction and arrangements of parts, all of which will loe made more apparent hereinafter as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein; 1 Y

Referring now particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like parts, it will be noted that the pen includes a casing 10, to which there is connected in the customary manner the pen point 11, there being also provided at the opposite end, a cap 12, threaded onto the end of the casing 10.
Disposed within the casing 10 is an ink or writing fluid reservoir 18, which is preferably in the form of a flexible or compressible rubber tube, this tube being connected in the customary manner with the ink delivering tube 14, arranged adjacent the pen point 11. r
rlhe upper end of the casing 10 is formed with an elongated slot 15, through which there is adapted to extend a bifurcated flexible portion 16, of the compressor 17. The main portion of the compressor 17 is arranged adjacent the flexible ink reservoir 13 Serial No. 714,06.
and, as will be'hereinafter more'fully described, is adapted' to compress the reservoir during the filling operation of the pen.
'lhe compressor 17 is shouldered as at 18, ano arrangedbetween this shoulder and the end of the casing, is a coiled spring 19, tending normally to maintain the compressor in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The
Yend of the compr-essor is in the form of a threaded shank 20, to which there is secured a handle 21.
lt is noted that the flexible bifurcated portion 1G of the compressor is in the form of two diverging arms, and'when the handie 21 is grasped and the compressor displaced longitudinally against the action `of the spring 19, these diverging flexible portions will be caused to pass through the slot 15 and thus will be forced towards one another, whereby the portion of the compressor arrangedladjacent the flexible reservoir will be forced against the same so as to deflate or compress the reservoir to the position illustrated in Fig. 3, whereupon the air will be expelled therefrom.
Consequently, if the pen is dipped in an ink well and the handle released, the coil spring 19 will return the compressorto its normal position and release the pressure upon the reservoir, whereupon `atmospheric pressure will force the ink upwardly into the reservoir to fill the same.
While the compressor 17 is shown as provided with only one longitudinally arranged arm, still it is within the scope of this .invention to attach to the other bifurcated portion of the compressor another longitudinal arm which will then engage the reservoir at the opposite side so that during the filling operation the reservoir will be compressed between the two portions of the compressor.
(lbviously, if the ink reservoir is not completely filled during the first operation, the pen may be inverted and the tube again compressed, and while in this compressed condition the penmay be again reversed and dipped into the ink whereupon if the compressor is then released, sufficient ink will be drawn into the reservoir to completely fill the same.
From the foregoing it will be immediately apparent that this improved fountain pen structure offers the possibility of manufacturing the same at a minimum cost, and
owing to its `simplicity offers the further possibility of assembling, repairing and operating the same With facility. The filling operation is, under all conditions, positive and efcient, and eliminates many of the known objections to fountain pens now in use.
lVhile the invention has been described herein in some detail, it is not intended-that the same be unnecessarily limited, but reservation is made to make suoli changes as may comer 'within the 'purview ofthe accompanying claims.

A fountain pen comprising a casing slotted a one end, a compressible ink reservoir in said casing, a compressor extending into said casing adjacent said reservoir and projecting through said slot, said compressor being provided With a bifurcated flexible portion adjacentsaid slot, a handle on the Lend thereof whereby said compressor may longitudinally displaced and caused to engage said reservoir; and a spring for returning said compressor to its normal position.

A fountain pen comprising a'casing, a con'ipressible ink tube in ysaidcasinfg, a compressor in sa-id casing, said casing being formed With a slot at one end through which saidcompressor extends, said compressor including` a flexible bifurcated port-ion arranged adjacent said slot and a handle secured to -the end thereof; va shoulder on ythe compressor and a springl arranged between said shoulder at the end of said casing, said compressor upon longitudinal displacement engaging said tube lby reason of said bifurcated portion andslot and a cap for enclosing said handle.
