WRITING INSTRUMENT Application filed. March 15, 1928.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fountain pen construction, and has more particular reference to an especially devised mechanism for compressing the ink sack or bag for refilling purposes.
Briefly, the novelty resides in an efficient and dependable operating device for the usual elongated ink bag wherein said device 'ischaracterized by a U-shaped compressor whose arms are disposed on opposite sides of the bag, with anchoring means for the con'ipressor, an expansion spring associated withthe arms of this compressor, and a rotary finger operating member for these arms and which is associated with the arms in such a manner as to compress them against the bag for momentarily deflating the bag to exhaust the air therefrom.
The particular details and the relative association and arrangement thereof will be come more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a writing instrument embodying a fountain pen constructed in accordance with the present invention and showing the bag compressing means in expanded state.
Figures 2 and 3 are cross sectional views taken approximately upon the plane of the line 22 and 33 respectively, of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an end view showing the sack compressor in section with the body (29) connecting pivot bolt (43) and central bearing (44) removed.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of one end portion of the instrument showing a slidable retaining latch for the rotary finger operating member.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the U- shaped member.
Referring to the drawings by numerals,
' it will be observed that the barrel- 12 is of cylindrical open ended form being screw threaded internally and externally at the left hand end. whose reduced end portion is threaded into the barrel 12, and further reduced to accommodate the rubber ink bag 25, which is fastened thereto, in the manner shown in Figure 1. Fitted into the bushing is a feed- 55 er 26, constituting a retaining element for the pen 27. The feeder is formed with an 111k channel 28, of appropriate dimension and the ink feeds to the pen in the customary manner. I
Referring now to the pencil structure, on the right hand end of the barrel, it will be observed that this comprises a cylindrical body 29 and associated details which constitute no part of the alleged novelty of my claims.
Attention is now invited to the especially constructed bag compressing means. Referring for instance to Figure 6, it will be ob served that a principal part of this comprises an elongated U-shaped compressor 36, having arms 37 disposed against diametrically opposite sides of the ink bag. The arms are formed with elongated openings 38, through which a retaining pin 39 passes, as shown in Figure 1. A coil spring 40 surrounds this pin and is interposed between the arms and normally spreads them apart. Beyond the slots 38 in the arms, the arms are bowed longitudinally and curved transversely as at 41. In addition, the bight portion 42 is flattened and formed with a central opening for passage of a connecting and pivot bolt 43. One end of the bolt is connected with the aforesaid body 29 and the other end passes through a central bearlng 44, carried by the rotary operating disc 45. The in has the double function of connecting t e pencil structure to the barrel as well as providing a pivot for the operating disc 45. This disc is provided with an external finger piece 46 to facilitate operation and as shown in Figure 4 is further provided with eccentric helicoid slots 47, through whichthe bowed portions 41 of the compressor spring pass.
The fingerpiece is notchedon one side as at 47', and a sliding latch 48 mounted on the body 29 cooperates with the notch in holding the disc against rotation.
\ Obviously, by releasing the latch and tuniing the fin er piece 46 of the disc, the complemental elicoid slot acts upon the bowed portion of the compressor springs 36, to compress the ba to refill it with ink..
While I have s own the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the splrit of the invention and the scope of'the appended claims. a 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In a writing instrument of the class described, a barrel, an ink bag located in,
the barrel, a substantially U-shaped compressor whose arms are disposed at diametrically opposite sides of the bags, anchoring means for said compressor, an expansion spring associated with the arms thereof, and a rotary finger operating member operable with said arms for compressing them against the action of'the expansion spring. 2. In a writing instrument of the class described, a barrel, an ink ba located in the barrel, a substantially U-s haped compressor whose arms are disposed at diametrically opposite sides of the bags, anchoring means for said compressor, an expansion spring associated with the arms thereof, a rotary finger operating member operable with said arms for compressing them against-the action of the expansion spring, said rotary operating member comprising a rotatably mounted disc having eccentric helicoid slots through which portions of the arms of said compressor pass.
