Improvement in a Gas-Cock Shield, of
which the following .is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a gas cock shield, adapted for use with gas stoves having stop cocks to control the iiow of the gas to the burners.
It is the purpose ofthe present invention, to
provide a shield which may be moved into position to cover the stop cocks of a gas stove, so as to prevent their undue operation by children and the like.
It is an object of the present invention, to provide a vshield of this class, which will be simple of structure, economical of manufacture and highly efficient in use, composed of a minimum numberNof parts.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a shield of this class comprising two main vbody portions, swingably mounted upon each other, and adapted for movement into parallel 4relation with each other when in inoperative position or extending at right angles to each other, when in operative position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cover plate, swingingly mounted on a supporting plate and adapted to be s wung into either horizontal or vertical position.
Another object of the invention 1s the provision of a cover plate having elongated attachment means for swingingly connecting the cover plate to a vertically extending supportin plate. v

As shown in the drawings, the invention is adapted for use with a gas stove, having a feed pipe Y9 for delivering gas to the burners of the stove. The feed pipe 9 is connected by a suitable connection 10 to individual burner pipes 14, a stop cock 11 being interposed between the burner pipe 14 and the delivery pipe 9, said stop cock being controlled by a suitable handle. An air regulator 13 is mounted on the forward end of the individual burner pipe 14. This pipe 14 projects through the forward wall 15 of the as stove, which is providedl `with suita le brackets 16 for supporting the cover 17 of the stove. The invention comprises a sheet of metal 18 which is provided, at one end, with the vertically extending flange 19 and the horizontally extending iange 20, these anges bein adapted to lie flush with the the p ate 18. At the o posite end of the plate 18, lying iush t erewith, are flanges 21 and 22 which are similar to the flanges 19 and 20. Secured by screws 24 to the plate 18 intermediate its ends are yokes 23, which are adapjted to embrace the delivery pipe 9, a suita le screw 25 being threaded into one of the arms of the yokes, and adapted for engaging the delivery pipe 9 to afford a firm' mounting. A cover plate 26 is provided, .which is also preferably made of metal land has one end angularly turned as at 27. The opposite end is also angularly turned as at 26', the angularity of this portion 26' being less than the angularly turned portion 27. As shown in Fig. 2, the end of the portion 26, is curled to form an open knuckle. Secured to the undersurface of the plate 26, at opposite ends thereof are strips of metal 28, one en'd of which is curled as at 29 to form with the plate 26 and its angularly turned portion 27 a knuckle. The opposite end of the strip 28, as shown in Fi 2, is angularly turned, to form a closure for the open knuckle `formed gr. the end of the angularly turned portion As clearly seen in Fig. 1, hangers are pro.
vided for attaching the plate 26 to the fianges 19 and 20 and 21 and 22. These hangers comprise U-shapedfmembers 3() having the legs 32 and 33 turned inwardly toward the flanges at opposite sides of the late 18. As clearly seenin Figs. 1 and 3, t e le 33 of the U-shaped member 30 is engage in the knuckle formed by the angularly'turned portions` 27 and 29. The leg 32 is projected into an opening formed in the flange 19 or in the flange 21.
Similar U-.shaped hangers 34 are provided with inturned legs, one of which is adapted to engage in an opening' formed 1n the flange 22 or 20, the other inturned leg of which is adapted to engagevin the knuckle formed by the curled portion of the angularvly turned portion 26, and the angularly turned portion 31.' The connection is such that the plate 26 may be swung to lie in horizontal positionl as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, or swung to extend verticallyas shown in Fig. 3. TvVhen it is desired to have access to the handles 12, the plate 26 will be swung into the position shown in Fig. 3. At' other times, when it is desired to prevent access to the burners by small children, 'and the like, the cover plate 26 will be swung to horizontal position, as shown in the drawings. The ends of the flanges 2O and 22 are each pressed out toprovide a bead 35.
When the cover plate 26 is swung into horizontal position, the U-shaped hangers 34 will ride over the bead 35, the bead 35 serving to ressthe U-shaped hangers outwardly slig tly against their tension and lock the cover plate 26 in operative position. It will be noted that in F1g. 4 the U-shaped hanger 34 is lying substantially horizontal. The bead 35 has a tendency, however, to move this U-shaped supporting member 34 downwardly past center, on account of the inclined sides of the bead 35, sothatea locking effect is provided.
It is thus seen that the shield is an effective one for the purpose, and that the number of parts has been reduced to a minimum, so that the cost of manufacture is at a minimum. The arrangement of the hangers is believed to be novel and is effective for the purpose in permitting the plate-26 to swing to its operative or inoperative position. l
While I have illustrated and describedy the preferred form of structure lldo notl wish to limit myself to the precise form of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the sco e of the appended claims.
Havmg thus described my invention, what l I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A gas cock shield of the class described, comprising a vertically extending supporting plate having a vertically extending and a horizontally projecting flange at opposite ends; a` supporting member for mounting said plate on the feed pipe of a gas stove and a cover plate, adapted, when in inoperative position, to extend parallel to and in close relation with said supporting plate and when in operative position, for extending horizontally in close engagement with said horizontally projecting flanges; and means for mounting said cover plate on said flanges for permitting the swinging of said cover plate into operative or inoperative position.l
2. A gas cock shield of the class described comprising la supportin plate, adapted for mounting in vertical re ation upon the delivery p1pe ofa gas stove; a vertically extending flange at opposite ends of said plateprojecting inwardly toward said delivery pipe; a supporting arm projecting horizon-v tally from the'upper end of each of said flanges inwardly of said delivery pipe; a cover plate, adapted when in operative position for lying in close engagement with said supporting arms, and for extending vertically in close relation to said supporting plate, when in inoperative position; and means connecting said plate to said flanges and said supporting arms for permitting the swinging movement of said plate to either posiion.
3. A gas shield of the class described, comprising a. plate, adapted for mounting in vertical position on the delivery pipe of a gas stove; a vertically extending flange at each end of said plate projecting inwardly towardsaid delivery pipe; a supporting arm projectmg inwardly toward said delivery pipe from the upper end of each of said flanges, said supporting arm being horizontal; a cover plate adapted, when in operative position, for lying horizontally in close engagement with said supporting arms, and when in inoperative postion forextending vertically in close relation to said sup orting plate; means for connecting one og the edges o'f said cover plate at its opposite ends to each of said flanges; and means for connecting the opposite edge of said cover plate atits opposite ends to each of said supporting arms, said connecting means permitting the free swingable movement of said cover gas stove; a vertically extending flange at n each end of said plate projecting inwardly toward said delivery pipe; a supporting arm projecting inwardly toward said dellvery pipe from the upper end of each of sa1d flanges, said supportmg arm being horizontal; a cover plate adapted, when in o erative position, for lying horizontally 1n close engagement with said supportin arms, and when in inoperative position, or extending vertically in close lrelation to said supportng plate; means for connecting one of the edges of said cover' plate at its opposite ends to each of said flanges; and
