SAWMILL-HEAD-BLOGK CLEANER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES D. BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glens F lls, in the county of lVarren and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawmill- Head-Block Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement which is adapted to be used in association witl'i a saw-mill head block.

It is my object to provide an improvement for a device ofthis class which may be accurately defined as a cleaner attachment for saw-mill head blocks, the title being descriptive of the function which the device serves to perform.

It is also my objec to provide a device of this class which comprises an exceedingly simple and inexpensive blade for scraping dust accumulations from the groove of the so-called knee, the device being characteristic in that it can be used in conjunction with conventional head blocks without requiring extensive alteration thereof.

Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

'Figure l is a side elevational view of a base plate and work seating knee forming part of a conventional form of saw mill head block now in use, the base plate being provided with a scraping knife in accordance with the present invention,

Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view i of the scraping blade or knife detached.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, 5 indicates a base plate of a saw mill head block upon the upper end of which is slidably mounted a work feeding knee or block 6 of well known form, said knee or block being moved toward the right of Figure 1 in a well known manner for feeding the work to the saw. The work feeding knee or block 6 is shown in its rearmost position.

The present invention as before stated includes means for automatically scraping the groove of the knee 6 during the operation of the latter, so that said knee will continue to operate indefinitely in an efficient manner, and whereby rendering of the saw mill inoperative for cleaning of the knees is made unnecessary. I obtain this object by attaching a scraping blade 8 to the base plate 5, so that the scraping edge 9 of said blade is exposed at the upper edge of the base plate 5 for scraping the groove of the knee 6 and thereby keeping the latter clean and smooth as is necessary to prevent slug ish operation of said knee.

In the preferred construction of the invention, the scraping blade 8 consists of a relatively long list lower portion adapted to be seated within a groove provided as indicated generally at 10, in one side of the base plate 5, said blade further including a laterally directed and twisted relatively short upper end portion seated in a deepened upper end portion of the groove 10, as indicated at 11 so that the upper edge 9 of the blade is disposed obliquely of the upper edge of the base plate 5 and extends from side to side of the latter and side to side of the knee ('3. The preferred manner of mounting the blade 8 consists in providing the same with longitudinally elongated slots 12 through which are passed the screws 13 that are threaded into the base plate 5 by means of which the blade 8 may be vertically adjusted so that the edge 9 is exposed to the n'oper degree above the upper edge of the base plate 5, and by means of which the blade 8 is maintained effectively in said adjusted pos' 'on.

In operation, with the blade 8 located slidably behind the point 7 which forms the rcurniost point at which the inner end of the knee moves, the blade 9 will exiend into the groove of the knee (3 as the latter is moved long'iudinally toward the rightof Figure l, 101' feeding the work to the saws and said knee is moved back to starting position toward the left for feeding another piece of work to the saws. This results in keeping the groove of the knee perfectly clean and smooth at all times and results in operation of the knee with a minimum frictional resistance.

From the above description, it is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
