This invention relates to wood-working tools, and more particularly to a small hand plane adapted to be used in the household or elsewhere for smoothing and shaving surfaces.
One object of this invention is to provide a device of the above nature which is composed of a minimum number of parts, and which will involve no precise machine operations in its manufacture.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to adjust and manipulate, compact, dependable, ornamental in appearance, and very efficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved plane, partly broken away to show the blade and its mounting means.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, parthroughout the several views, the improved plane is indicated generally by the numeral l0, and comprises a flat sheet metal sole plate II which is turned upwardly at its opposite sides so as to form parallel vertical side walls l2, [3.
The sole plate ll andthe adjacent lower portions of the side walls l2, l3 are provided with a transverse slot l4 through which a lower cutting edge l5 of a blade I6 is adapted to extend. The blade I6 is slidably supported in an inclined position upon a pair of inclined lower ears l1, l8, which are struck inwardly from opposite portions of the side walls l2, I3, and a cross bar l9 which has reduced ends 20 secured in the upper portions of said side walls.
In order to hold the blade l6 securely in place, provision is made of a clamping plate 2| having a downwardly offset lower end 22 which is engaged beneath a pair of upper ears 23, 24 struck inwardly from the side walls l2, l3, and which bears against the upper surface of said blade IS a short distance forwardly of the lower ears l1, l8.
An upper portion of the clamping plate 2| carries a thumb screw 25-which is adapted, to bear against theaupper-surface-or the blade l6, wherebythe clamping plate 2| may be actuated to exert a powerful lever action against the.upper ears 24 and thus lock the blade IS in operating position against the lower ears I8 and the cross bar l9.
The clamping plate 2| is extended rearwardly and upwardly beyond the thumbscrew 25 so as to form a convex handle or shield 2 la which will serve as an abutment for the user's hand during operation of the plane It), thus permitting an efficient operating force to be applied to the plane without discomfort to the user.
The depth of the out which may be made by the cutting edge I5 is adapted to be regulated by means of an adjusting screw 26 which is disposed below the handle Ma and which is threaded downwardly through a central aperture in the cross bar l9 in a direction parallel to the blade Hi. The lower end portion of the adjusting screw 26 is provided with a peripheral groove 21 which is interengaged by the lowerend of a forked lug 28 centrally secured upon the lower side of the blade l6.
Thus, it will be seen that the blade l6 may easily be moved in a longitudinal direction so as to adjust the position of the cutting edge l5 merely by turning the knurled head of said adjusting screw 26.
It will be understood, however, that the thumb screw 25 will first be loosened to permit adjustment of the blade l6, and will be tightened when the adjustment is completed. The thumbscrew 25 is adapted to actuate the clamping plate 2| so as to hold the blade l6 securely against change of adjustment at all times when the plane I0 is in use.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
1. In a carpenters plane, a sheet metal sole plate having a pair of parallel upturned side walls integral therewith, said sole plate being provided with a transverse blade slot, an inclined blade 3 located between said side walls and having a. bottom cutting edge freely disposed within said slot. means for supporting the lower surface of said blade comprising a pair of lower ears struck inwardly from said side walls and an upper crossbar rigidly secured between said side walls, a pair of upper ears struck inwardly from said side walls and spaced from said lower cars, a blade clamping plate provided with a downwardly olfset lower portion having a shoulder engaged by 10 said pair of upper ears, the lower end of said clamping plate engaging said blade adjacent the cutting edge thereof, said clamping plate hav-' ing a thumb screw threaded therein and engaging the upper portion of said blade, and screw 15 means threaded into said cross-bar and loosely engaging a depending fork on said blade for longitudinally adjusting said blade.
