Be it known that we, Davie S. Fennelr and Hnnonn S. Fonsnnno, citizens. of the United States, and residents ot Bridgeport, in the countyl of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification..
This invention relates to a double acting floor hinge and therobject of the invention is to provide a hinge` of the presentcharacter which will be an improvement generally upon all hinges of the same type heretoitore known.
`With the above and other objects in view, the invention comprises the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as now to be fully described and as hereinafter to be specically claimed, it being understood that the disclosure herein is merely illustrative ofthe principles of the invention and meant in no way in al limiting sense, changes in details of construction and. arrangement of parts beingpermissible so long as within theV scope ogt. the4 appended claims. y

Numeral 16 indicates a loor plate having holes to receive screws 1T for attaching I.he floor plate in position beneath a door, as indicated in Fig. 1. As disclosed, the Hoor plate has, preferably adjacent its center, a raised portion 1S providing a pocket 19 bcneath said plate to receive a reiniiorcing block 20, and the raised portion and bloclt have square openings, denoted 2l and QQ, rcspectively, to receive a squared end Q3 olf a stationary post Q-t, the squared end being permanently secured in the raised portion and block as indicated at As shown more clearly in Fig. 23, the lower plate 12 has an opening 2G rotatably and Vsnugly receiving a cylindrical portion QT oi the stationary post situated a trifle above said raised portion, and 2S denotes a stop plate, ixed upon said squared end and located between the lower plate and raised portion of the tloor plate, having oppositely disposed stops 29 adapted to be engaged by a pin 30 projecting downwardly from said lower plat-e. The stationary post 2st has oppositely disposed wings 231, situated above said stop plate and at some little distance from the upper plate of the frame, merging in vertically arranged, pvotal shoulders 252 against which a spring actuated plunger 2325, to be described, operates. The stationary post also includes an annular, horizontally disposed plate mcmber 2H; situated at the top of said post and beneath said upper plato 1l.

To secure the hinge to a door, the head d4 of the stud lll may first be linserted through the wide portion of the elongated slot 52, said wide portion being of sulieient width to this end, and may'then be moved to the narrow portion of said slot, of insufficient width to allow passage of the head. adjusting the door either before or after it is secured. To this end, the dise has periplieral ribs 5i providing slots 58 and the end portion l5 has a protuberance 59 to lie Iin any one of the slots between two ribs to normally hold the dise from turning in the end portion, as will be understood. By inserting a suitable tool in one of the slots, the disc can be rotated, the coil spring receding against the action of the tool to allow the protuberance to ride over the ribs, to move the outer end of the'plunger 33 transversely of the door jainb.
The manner in which the hinge functions will be obvious from the drawing and full description. It is shown in its normal position in Fig. l. Here the door is closed and each of the pivotal shoulders is resting in a groove 47 of an arni of the yoke, the coil spring being suieiently compressed to insure that the door will remain in closed po-A sition until it is intentionally opened. W' hen force is exerted to'open the door, the frame l() of the hinge is swung upon the stationary post as a` pivot. That is to say, the lower plate l2 of the frame pivots on the cylindrical portion 2T of said post, while the cap of the upper plate ll pivots on the an; nular plate meniber-li of said post, special attention' being directed to the fact that there is an ordinary7 ball bearing, as well as a eireuinferential bearing between said Cap and annular plate member.
When the ydoor is swung open in either direction the net result is the same, the pivotal shoulder and yoke arm with grooves, respectively, being duplioatesof each other, except that in the case of each, one is right and one is left.
To open the door, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, sufficient force is applied to overcome the actionof the coil spring. As the door opens, one ofthe yoke arms leaves its pivotal shoulder, as is obvious, and the other yoke iarm turns on its pivotal shoulder to move the yoke and plunger away from the axis about which the hinge fraine'pivots, the plunger moving outwardly through the opening l-S in the position l5 of the lowei` member of the fra1ne.
Naturally, the tendency of the coil spring is to urge the door toward closed position while the plunger:v is turned about the shoulder 32 as a pivot, .untilV said plunger has reached its dead center position, but as soon as the plunger has passed the dead center position, the spring urges the door in opposite direction, toward wide open position, as will be apparent. But at this time, or soon after, the pin 30 ontlie lower Yplate l2 of the frame engages astop 29 of the stop plate to arrest the opening movement of the door, andthe door remains Yin,v
stable, wide. open' position. To close-the door, force 1s applied; to. move the traine in reverse directionpast the dead center position ofthe plunger as before. As disclosed, the door would be swung on an arc of about 90 Jfrom closed posit-ion to the dead center position of the plunger', the pin engaging the stop 29 almost immediately after the dead center position is passed, whereby the door when open is at an angle slightly greater than a right-angle to the structurehaving the door, as is to be preferred.-
Having thus fully described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
- l. A hinge comprising a floor plate, a stationary post secured therein, said post including a cylindrical portion and having oppositely disposed pivotal shoulders, an
annular plate memberV fixed upon said Vpivotal shoulders Vand surrounding the post,
a frame comprising an upper plate with cap pivotally associated with said annular plate member and a lower plate pivoted upon said cylindrical portion, the iiange of said cap engaging the circumferential margin ot said annular plate member and there being a pocket between said annular plate member and cap, said post extending' into said pocket,a'ball retaining member in said pocket and rotatablerupon said post, said ball retaining p member having individual sockets spaced from said post, balls insaid sockets and engaging the adjacentvfaces of said annular plate member and cap, a stop plate with stops, a pin on said lower plate u and adapted to engage said stops, and a spring actuated plunger associated with said trame and including arms with grooves adapted to engage said pivotal shoulders.
2. A hinge comprising a floor plate, a stationary post secured therein, a frame pivoted upon the post and comprising an upper plate, a lower plate and a connector between said plates and spaced from the pivot for the frame, a spring actuated plunger associated with the frame, means for adjusting the outer end of the plunger transversely of a door jamb, said means comprising a disc rotatably fitting the connector ol the frame and having an off center opening in which the plunger is slidably arranged, the disc extending beyond the frame connector and having peripheral ribs providing slots adapted to receive a tool for rotating the disc, and a protuberance upon said connector and adapted to lie in any one of said slots of the disc between the ribs thereof to normally hold the disc from turning in the frame connector.
