PRooEss or ORNAMENTING LEATHER.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lViLLY KNOLL, a citizen of Germany, residing at Stuttgart, Germany, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Ornamenting Leather, of which the following is a specification.
A process ,is known for the mass production of a colored or mult-i-colored decoration on leather wherein the leatheris dyed,
colored or stained after the application of applied therethe drawing or design to be The process is thus limited or restricted to a smooth surface base or background and further definite preparations, dressings or finishes are required. Moreover the colored drawings or decorations thus obtained are not thoroughly waterproof.
The present invention relates to a process which is an improvement and a further dyeing or staining of the leather can be effected before the application of the colored drawing or design and for the use of the process a suitably colored and preparedleather can be used. A further improvement consists in that a thoroughly waterproof decoration is obtained without in anyway damaging or injuring the highly artistic effect produced by the process. 3
The process can be used or carried out on suitably tanned and prepared leather and a thoroughly waterproof decoration is obtained. thus considerably extending the possibilities of usefulness of the leather so decorated. The essential features consist in 1. That the drawing-or drawings or deof the invention sign or designs are applied with the help.
of a color fixing means or a mordant which can be applied on already colored and prepared leather, while permitting also of a repeated color superimposition, that is to say, whether the colors be the same as the original color or different colors.
2. That the decoration or decorations thus obtained are thoroughly waterproof.
The process of the present invention difi'ers from the hitherto known processes of decorating leather (pressing, stamping, graining, etching, hating, drenching, painting, etc.) by reason of the fact that the Application filed October 6, 1925. Serial No. 60,908.
process can be carried out industrially 111 a. uniform manner and in accordance with the large quantities required. By the present process, in contradistinction to the known processes, coloring, staining or dyeing of a suitable design or drawing is carried out in the course of tanning, graining and preparing the leather and in such manner that a decoration so obtained is thoroughly waterproof. The softness and qualityof the upper surface of the leather is not injured or damaged in any way by the process.
The process is carried out in such manner that the desired coloring, staining or dyeing and preparation is then the drawing or drawings or design or designs is or are applied by means of a color medium which simultaneously acts as a fixing medium and thereafter, if required the re-dyeing or counter-staining or subsequent coloring is effected in a simple manner.
The process may be carried out by firs applying a light, dark or colored back ground to the leather, such as staining or dyeing or the like, depending upon the effectdesired, and then portions of the leather are covered by means of a pattern, such as a stencil, corresponding to any desired design and made of any suitable material. .The color is then applied by means of any suitable brush, or by spraying under pressure, to the uncoveredportions of the leather. The color contains a fixing means, such as lacquer, varnish, or a nitrocellulose solution, in order to permanently bind the color to the leather, so
given to the leather,
that the color will not rub off during wear and will not crack when the leather is folded. p
I claim" as my invention A process for the production of a colored design on leather which consists in the sue-- cessive steps of applying a background on leather; placing a pattern on the leather conforming to the desired design in order to cover portions of the-leather; andthen applving a color containing a fixing means on the background on the uncovered portions of the leather, in order to form a decorative design on the leather.
In testimony whereof'I affix my signature WILLY KNOLL.
