Description

Feb. 16 1926.
J. VROWLETT MARKER FOR CORN PLANTERS Filed A rii 9, 1925 Patented Feb. 16, 1926.
'PATENI' OFFlCEe JERRY ROWLETT, 0F MOUND CITY, MISSOURI.
MARKER FOR CORN PLANTERS.
' Application filed April 9,1925.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Jnnnr Itowiin'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mound City, in the county of Holt and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Markers for Corn Planters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in markers for corn planters and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character comprising a marker carrying shaft together with means whereby requisite rotation is imparted to the shaft.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind comprising a tubular member through which the marker shaft is disposed together with means whereby relative endwise movement of said member and shaft effects the requisite rotation of said shaft.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar-' rangement of the several parts of my improved marker for corn planters whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac companying drawings, wherein Eigure '1 is a fragmentary view in top plan illustrating a marker constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken sub-- stantially on the line 33 of Figure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, F denotes the frame of a planter to one end portion of which is affixed a sub stantially U-shaped member 1 between the side arms of which is positioned a block 2. The block 2 is provided with the oppositely disposed trunnions 3 rotatably supported by i the side arms of the U-shaped member 1.
Disposed through the block 2 is an end portion of the shaft 4, said shaft having Serial No. 21,898.
fixed thereto at opposite sides of the block the collars 5 whereby the shaft l is held against substantial lengthwise movement through the block 2. i The outer end portion of the shaft 1 has fixed thereto a marker 6 of any desired type. The opposite end portion of the shaft 4 is disposed through an opening 7 extending axially of the cylindrical member 8 the wall of said opening being provided with a spiral groove 9 extending entirely therearound. The shaft 4: is provided with a laterally directed member or lug 10 on which is mounted a roller 11, said member or lug l0 and roller 11 eX- tending within the groove 9 so that upon reciprocation of the member 8 requisite rotation will be imparted to the shaft 4:-
The outer end of the member 8 is operatively connected, as at 12, with a rock arm 14 depending from the shaft 15. The shaft 15 is rotatably supported by the frame F and is operatively engaged, as at 16, with an operating lever or arm 17. This arm or lever 17 is intermittently operated in any desired manner from a requisite movable part of the planter, as for instance a tappet on one of the rear wheels. The arm or lever is also preferably arranged at the rear portion of the planter frame with the arm 6 marking the ground in the same general direction as the travel of the planter.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a marker for corn planters constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In combination with a planter frame, a shaft rotatably supported thereby, a marker carried by the shaft, a member telescopically receiving an end portionof the shaft, means for reciprocating said member,
and coacting means carried by said shaft and member for rotating the shaft upon reciprocation of the member.
2. In combination with the frame of a planter, a block pivotally supported. by the frame, a shaft disposed through the block, means for holding the shaft against endwise movement with respect to thevnloek, a marker carried by the shaft, a tubular member,
said tubular member and an end portion of the shaft telescoping one within the other.
means for reciprocating the -m'ein'ber, and
ooaoting means carried by the member and the shaft for rotatmrtlwv shaft upon reciprocation of the member;
3. In combination with a planter tame, a shaft rotatablysnpported thereby, a marker carried by the shaft, a member telescopically-receiving'anvend portion of the shaft, means for reciprocating said member, said member beingprovided With a spiral groove, and a laterally disposed member carried by the shaft and riding in the groove.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'lfix my 20 signature.
