DAVID 'I. MONTGOMERY, 0F LAUREL, NEBRASKA.
PLANTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1 1, 1919.
Application filed August 24, 1918. Serial No. 251,248.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID T. MONTGOM- ERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurel, in the county of Cedar and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in planters, and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character of a check-row type wherein the necessity of a wire is eliminated, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby the drill shaft is caused to properly operate at desired intervals through the medium of a mechanism driven from a movable part of the planter and more particularly the main supporting axle.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a marking member is operated by the drill shaft and is positioned to engage the ground substantially the same moment at which seeds are deposited in a hill, or the like.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the improved planter whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a corn planter constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating the means directly coacting with a drill rod for rocking the same, together with the marker carried thereby.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a drill shaft operating, in a well known manner, in connection with the hoppers H for causing the seed to drop therefrom upon dropping movement being imparted to the shaft 1'. Rotatably supported by the hoppers H above and in vertical alinement with the drill shaft 1 is a second shaft 2 which is continuously driven by and in unison with the main supporting axle A through the medium of the shaft S or its equivalent.
Depending from the shaft 2 is a rock arm 3 clamped or otherwise applied to the shaft. The free end portion of the arm 3 is provided with the anti-friction member 4, herein shown as a roller, which is adapted to contact with the upwardly directed rock arm 5 carried by the drill shaft 1. As the shaft 2 rotates the engagement of the roller 4: with the arm 5 will impart sufiicient rocking movement to the shaft 1 to effect the desired dropping of the seeds from the hop pers H. It is to be understood, that, in the present embodiment of my invention, the arm 3 contacts with the arm 5 from below.
Clamped or otherwise aflixed to the drill shaft 1, in close proximity to each of the hoppers H is a marker M, which, upon the rocking of the shaft 1 is caused to properly engage the surface over which the planter is working and as herein disclosed the outer or working end portion of the marker M is provided with a laterally directed and inwardly or upwardly facing hook member 6 with which to produce the desired markings upon the surface. The member M is preferably formed of strap metal with its lower end portion twisted as at a, whereby the flat faces at the opposite end portions of the member M are arranged substantially at right angles, and so that the hook member 6 is properly positioned and the edges of the hook member arranged in order to facilitate the cutting operation.
After the drill shaft has been rocked through the medium of the arm 3 the same is returned to its normal position in a conventional manner and a this particular feature forms no part of my present invention, it is believed that a detailed description and illustration thereof is unnecessary.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a planter constructed in accordance with my invention i particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
The combination with a drill shaft of a corn planter, and means for intermittently locking said shaft; and a marking member carried directly by said shaft, said member consisting of a metal strap having, its fiat faces and opposite end portions arranged substantially at right angles, the outer end portion of the strap being provided With a laterally directed and inwardly facing hook member, the side edges of the hook memher being substantially at right angles to the vertical plane in Which the member rocks.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ail-ix my signature in the presence of a Witness.
DAVID T. MONTGOMERY.
Witness:
.CHAs. G. JORDAN.
