Description

Feb. 9 1926.
H. H. BERRY ELECTRIC FIRE Filed Sept. 5, 1924 FAQ-3-5- .Znueni'bz'" Patented Feb. 9, 1926.
U NIT ED STATES HERBERT HENRY BERRY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
ELECTRIC FIRE.
Application filed September 5, 1924. Serial No. 736,190.
To all whom it may cmwem:
Be it known that I, HERBERT HENRY BERRY, a British subject, residing at 85-86 Newman Street, London, W. 1, England, have'invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Fires, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric fires of the kind in which imitation fuel is arranged in a grate or fireplace and has behind it one or more electric lamps preferably in conjunction with flicker-producing devices, said fuel being in slab like form and translucent so that the light from the lamps will shine through it.
With this type of electric fire it is usual to provide one or more heating elements, say electric resistances and a reflector which generally extends from the back of the fire in an upward and forward direction.
My improved fire may include any suitable form of electric resistance and a reflector but if these are employed they are preferably easily detachable, that is detachable without mechanical skill and so as to be used at will.
The chief object of my invention is to provide a fire which shall be very reallstic in appearance, easily manufactured, not likely to get out of order and with which the slab-like fuel can be used with better advantage.
According to my invention I construct an independent basket or grate having an ornamental or other front and I arrange behind the front a panel in which one or more slabs of imitation fuel is or are fitted and I provide a second panel to form the top of the fire and also fit into it one or more slabs of imitation fuel, the construction of the said panel being such that it, with the fuel, can be lifted away from the grate or basket to give access to the interior of the grate, an essential feature of the invention being that I provide a bar on one of the panels which hides the junction between the front panel and the top panel so that the grate or basket will appear to be filled with fuel.
The back of the grate or basket, or it may be the back of the upper panel, may be provided with brackets carrying suitable in sulated contacts to receive one or more heating elements and the back of the basket may be provided with means to removably hold a reflector. As an example of this means I may provide sockets on the back of the grate or basket and I may furnish the reflector with feet adapted to fit into the sockets by simply dropping therein.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 shows one of my improved electric fires having an ornamental front the top bar of which hides the junction between the front panel and the top panel.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of Fig. 1,
but with the addition of brackets mounted on the back of the upper panel and adapted to receive an electric heating element. This drawing also shows a reflector having an extension or leg fitting into a socket on the back of the grate.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of another grate.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the grate 1, lamp 2, and flicker producing fan 3, are conventional. The front of the grate is filled with imitation fuel 4 held in a front panel 13, while an upper and readily removable panel 12 is provided with imitation fuel 7 The fuel 4: and 7 is made up of slabs, one or more oil: which are fitted into the respective panels. The juncture between the upper panel 12 and the front panel 13, which would otherwise be unsightly, is covered by a top bar 10 of the grate, the said top bar being carried by the upper panel 12, as shown.
If desired, and as illustrated in Fig. 2 butomitted from the illustration of Fig. 1, the top panel 12 may be provided with brackets 14 supporting a heating element shown in dotted lines at 15. This heating element has pins 16 engaging sockets 17 in the bracket so as to be readily removable. With such heating element, there is provided a reflector 20 arranged in rear of the element and extending above the imitation fire, the lower end of the reflector being removably seated in sockets 18 on the back of the grate.
In Fig. 3, the construction is similar to that previously described, except in the fact that the front panel 21, corresponding to the panel 13 of the preferred form, is provided at its upper end with a forwardly extending fuel confining bar 24. The upper panel 22 of this form overlies and bears upon the confining bar 24 of the front panel and is provided at its forward edge with a bar 23 which is disposed in line with the remaining grate bars and covers the junc ture between the supporting bar of panel 22 and the confining bar 24 of front panel 21.
ent grate, a panel fitted into the front of the grate, imitation fuel in the panel, a second panel fitted over the grate and removable panel and adapted to be positioned in front of and conceal the juncture between the 10 panels at the upper forward edges thereof when the panels are in applied position.
, In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
\Vhat I claim is An electric fire, comprising an lndependtherefrom, imitation fuel carried bythe sec:
ond panel, and a bar carried by said second HERBERT HENRY BERRY.
