Description

' only can be arranged to fit to the atented ct? 9, 1923.
HERBERT HENRY BERRY, 0F LONDGN, ENGLAND.
rarrra'rlon mun.
Application filed October 3, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT HENRY Bunny, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of B6 Newman Street, London, IV. 1, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Imitation Fires, of which the following is a specification,'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to imitation fires of that kind in which a lighting agent, say for example, one or more electric lamps, or one or more gas burners are arranged behind imitation fuel, with or without flicker-producing devices.
In a simple form I construct the slabs with substantially smooth inner faces and very irregular outer surfaces, said slabs be ing stepped at their edges to fit one over the other to prevent formation of chinks. Such slabs can be arranged behind the bars in front of the fire and other slabs or one upper ends of these front slabs and extend over the top of the fire.
Into the irregular surfaces of the slabs, I'may place or fix'pieces of coke, coal or other substances which will enhance the fuellike appearance.
I will now describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which various views of one of the many forms the invention may take is shown by way of example.
Fig. 1 shows the inner side of three slabs l, 2 and 3 suitable which is wider at the back than at the front. Fig. 2 is a top or edge view of the same slab for fitting into a. grate Serial No. aeaoet.
Fig. 3 is a front view and ig. 4 is substantially a sectional view of the slab 2 and shows same in a e rate indicated by dotted lines o and also s ows atop or covering slab 2.
It will be observed that the adjoining edges of the slabs 1 and 2 are stepped or overlapped at a and likewise the edges at 5 overlap for the purpose of preventing a chink of light passing straight out from the lamp 6 which has a flicker producing device c of known form.
The slabs l, 2, 3 and 2 are approximately flat on their inner faces but are roughened or irregular on their outer faces 6 and have partly embedded in them pieces of coal or coke 7.
The slabs which are or smooth on their inner faces are thus provided on their outer faces with pieces of coal or coke and sand embedded therein to externally present an irregularity of transmitted lighting effect and the exact representation of this lighting eflect around and about the pieces of coal and coke, the sand serving to diffuse the light to thereby more nearly simulate the action of a burning fire of coal or. coke material.
What I claim is A construction simulating a fuel bed for imitation fires, consistin of a slab of translucent material mol ed comparatively smooth on the inner surface and havin pieces of opaque light diffusing and fuelsimula'ting material embedded in the outersurface.
In witness whereof my hand.
HERBERT HENRY BERRY.
