UNITED Sililill ABRAHAM GRDON, OF' BLKLYN, NEW' YORK.
COLLASIEBLE BOX.
Application filed February 24, 19535.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM GonDoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of N ew York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of N ew York, have invented a new and lmproved Collapsible Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a collapsible box. An object of the invention is to provide a simple an-d efficient boi; in which the end sections, the side sections, and the bottom and top can be readily separated and packed in a flat, compact package for shipment or storage.
Another object concerns the provision of a simple and eflicient construction whereby the parts can be engaged in an interlocking manner to be effectively and positively related for service as a rigid, strong construction.
A further object concerns the provision of means whereby the assembly and disassembly of the parts can be effected rapidly and in a simple manner.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section taken through the box;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on the box on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the side section partly removed from the end section;
Fig. 4: is a longitudinal horizontal section p taken on the line 4-11 of Fig 1;
Fig. 5 is a partial vertical section taken on the line of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section through a corner of a modified form of construction.
The forms of the. invention shown in the drawings are preferred forms, although it is understood that other modifications in the construction and arrangement of the part-s and in the character of the materials used may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In general the invention comprises bottom, top, side and end sections, which are engagingly interlocked by the engagement of flanges and shoulders on the one and the other of adjacent sections. These flanges and shoulders are formed on the ends of the sections and engage preferably by slidable engagement so that the sections Serial No. 11,258.
can be slid ont of and into engagement with each other and in the process of such engagement will lock.
ln the preferred form of the invention, the box comprises a top section 10, a bottom section 1l, side sections 12 and 13, and end sections, one of which, 1'-1-, is shown. The end sections, the side sections, and the top sections are provided with. central depressions. On the side sections 12 and 13 these depressions form shoulders such as 15. rlhe vertical ends of the lateral sections 12 and 13 are bent angularly, as shown in lig. l.
For the purpose of illustrating, I will describe one corner of the boi; with respect to the engagement of the end section lfl and the lateral sect-ion 12, which is characteristic of the engagement at the four corners of the bor; between the end and the lateral section. r1`he lateral section 12 has its end bent to form a channel member wl'iich is provided with an offset wall 16 parallel to the vertical wall of the lateral section 12, with an end wall 17 transverse to the lateral section7 and with a reversely turned flange 18 parallel to the lateral section 12. rFhis channel member has also a space-plate 19 transverse to the lateral section and spaced from the wall 17 to form a passage.
It will be observed t iat the end section 14 is provided with an offset end wall. 20 parallel thereto but offset therefrom. Connecting this offset wall 20 to the end section 1&1 is a shouldered wall 21 transverse to the end section, which is adapt-ed to pass between the flange 18 and the end of the plate 19, as shown. The offset wall 20 of the end section is provided with a horizontally disposed flange 22, shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5, which will prevent the end section from being slid into engagement with the lateral sections more than a given distance, by reason of the fact that it will strike the upper edge of the space-plate 19.
The bottom plate 11 is provided with downwardly turned flanges 23 which are engageable with upwardly turned flanges 24 along the lower edge of the lateral sect- ions 12 and 13. llhe bottom plate is provided with a plurality of pivoted arms 25. These arms are of springy material, the ends of which are adapted to be sprung under the shoulder 15, shown in Fig. 1, to hold the bottom plate in position. The top plate 10 is provided with a centrally recessed portion CTI that fits between the downwardly turned flanges 26 at the upper edgesof the lateral sections l2 and 13. rlhis snng fit will hold the top in place.
In F ig. 6 a modiied form of the invention is shown, in which the lateral end sections 27 and 28 are provided with curved ends 29 and 30 adapted to slidably interlock in the manner shown.
lVhat l claim is l. A collapsible box, which comprises a lateral section having on its end an offset wall parallel to the section, a wall transverse to the section, a rearwardly turned fiange on the end of said transverse wall, said flange being parallel to the section, and a plate spaced from the transverse wall and parallel thereto to form a passage therebetween, an end section having an voffset flange portion on its end, and a connecting wall, the fiange portion adapted to slide between the spaced-plate and the transverse wall of' the lateral section, the connecting i wall of the end section adapted to slide between the rearwardly extending flange and the end of the spaced-plate.
2. A collapsible box, which comprises a lateral section having on its end an offset wall parallel to the section, a wall transverse to the section, a rearwardly turned flange on the end of said transverse wall, said flange being parallel to the section, a plate spaced from the transverse wall and parallel thereto to form a passage therebetween, an end section having an offsetflange portion on its end, a connecting wall, the flange portion adapted to slide between the spaced-plate and the transverse wall of the lateral section, the connecting wall of the end section adapted to slide between the rearwardly eX- tending flange and the end of the spacedplate, and a horizontally inwardly extending flange on one end of the offset flange portion of the end section to engage with the spaced-plate to limit the movement of. the one section with respect to the other.
A collapsible box, which comprises a lateral section having on its end an offset wall parallel to the section, a wall transverse to the section, a rearwardly turned flange on the end of' said transverse wall, said fiange being parallel to the section, a plate spaced from the transverse wall and parallel thereto to form a passage therebetween, an end section having an offset flange portion on its end, a connecting` wall, the flange portion adapted to slide between the spacedplate and the transverse wall of the lateral section, the connecting wall of the end section adapted to slide between the rearwardly extending flange and the end of the spacedplate, a horizontally inwardly extending .flange on one end of the offset flange portion of the end section to engage with the spaced-plate to limit the movement of the one section with respect to the other, an upwardly turned flange on the bottom ot the lateral section, a bottom section having a downwardly turned flange, said latter section having an inwardly extended shoulder adjacent the bottom edge, and a pivoted spring-latch arm on the bottom section adapted to vbe moved so that its end will lie under the shoulder to hold the bottom section and the lateral section together.
