Box OR CRATE.
Application led February 11, 1924. Serial No.V $491,942.
kMilk bottle crates kand other crates are frequently provided with stacking irons on the top thereof at opposite corners to facilitate stacking a plurality of crates one upon the other. These stacking irons cause material wear and damage to the crates an-d it is an object of my invention to provide means for protecting crates against wear or damage from stacking irons.
A further object of the invention is to reinforce andv strengthen the corners of wooden boxes and crates by means which will provide a metal face on the inside of the two parts forming .the corner, .and which will also leave the outside of the corner bare of metal.
The invention also has for its object to provide a reinforcing and strengthening means for the corners of boxes and crates which is'easily made, is simple in construction, and is easily and securely applied to the box or crate. y
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention,V
' Fig. l is a perspective view showing parts of two crates, one provided with my reinforcing and strengthening means at the rlower corner, and the other provided with a stacking iron .at its upper corner.
Fig.v 2 is a sectional view illustrating the invention and showing the position which the stacking iron of another crate would occupy with relation to the reinforcing and strengthening means7 and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rein# forcing and strenghtening device.
I have illustrated the invention on the corner of a crate 5 which has a shoe-piece Gand a-slot 7. The reinforcing and strengthening device comprises an angular vchannel member shown in Fig. 3 and consisting of two parts, duplicates of each other, and compris-V ing the connecting web 8 and the ianges 9, 10, each provided with holes 11 to receive the nails 12. The two partsof thereinforcing and strengthening device .are formed by,
two channels with their webs integrally connected, the said parts being arranged at an angle to each other to correspond with kthe 5 angularity of the corner in'which they are vstrengthening the corners of wooden boxes `projections on any exposed surface of the fastened. Y The ordinary .crate has right angle corners, as indicated inthe drawings, and for such corners the device will, of course, have its parts located at right angles to each other. This device may be conveniently stampedout of sheet metal'and it is v applied `to the crate as indicated in Fig. l,y Y f on the inside ofthe crate with the'flanges of one part embracing the shoe-piece 6, andwith ythe upper flange of the other part seated in the slot 7. I prefer to recess the shoe-piece 6V at 12 and the other member of the corner at 13 to receive the lower flanges 9,]10, so Athat they will lie flush with the bottom of the box or crate. Nails are driven through portions of the crate and through the flanges of the reinforcing and strengthening device and securely hold the device in its proper position with faces of the webs forming faces at the inside corner of the crate.
The device isi especially useful for protecting the crate against damage from stackp -ing irons, like 14;, for example, which are often providedon boxesand crates. It will be noted that the projection 15 o the stacke5 results when the boxes or crates are not protected against the stacking irons.
My invention provides a simple but strong andk substantial means for reinforcing and n y 96 and crates, and which can be easily and economically made and applied to the box or y, crate. Furthermore, thel device is so constructed and applied that it will not form box or cra-te and, therefore, it does not interfere in .any way with handling the box or crate. v
' I have shown the invention ina simple form which I have found adapted for the'100 purpose, but itis apparent that it may be changed in details of construction without departing fromthe invention orv sacrificing its advantages, and I- reserve theright to make all such changes as fairly fall within Y' the scope of the following claim.
I claimz- The combination with a box 'or crate, of n meansfor reinforcing and strengthening an exposed corner of the same, said means com- @rising-.an angulaily bent @hanne-1 member embodying 'a' web :nd paiir'sbf flanges op Vplied to the inner Walls ofthe box or l(3i-afee et .an exposed corner thereof, the web ,of said said corner and one flange of eachpairrbe-V the box or crate at said corner, and fastenl0 ingswprojeoting through said flanges `AMos LeFoREMAN". y
