Description

. M. CARR I SAFETY DEVICE Filed Sept. 28, 1923 ATTO R N EY Patented Feb. 9, 1926.
UNITED STATES MATTIE CARE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY DEVICE.
Application filed. September 28, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTIE CARR, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety device for use with window, doors, or wagons and has for its primary object the construction of a safety device or guard that may be readily extended or collapsed and when in extended position will be positively locked against tampering by \an unauthorized person.
An object of the invention is the novel manner of constructing one set of end links so that same may be quickly snapped into engagement with the locking device.
A. feature of the invention is the novel construction of the locking device for the extensible links.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a window construction showing my improved safety device or guard in extended position.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View on the line 22 of Figure 1 through a portion of the window construction and my device.
Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the connection between the links.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the lock device.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 1.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the lock device.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one of the many constructions of my invention the letter B designates a window construction including the sash C. In this particular instance I am showing my safety device used upon a window but there are various other uses to which my invention may be put. As shown a plate 1 is rigidly connected to the frame structure in any suitable manner such as by screws 2 and this plate has pivotal connection 3 with my improved extensible member 4; now to be described.
This member is of a toggle link construction consisting of a series of links 5 pivotally connected with the end set 6 pivotally conheat d t t plate 1. One of the link .7 at

the other end set is provided with a projection 8 having a cam surface 9 and a notch 10. My improved lock construction consists of a casing 11 rigidly secured to the window frame liLIlCl provided with an opening 12 for the passage of the projection 8. Pivotally connected to the interior of the casing is a latch 12 adapted to be moved upwardly by the cam 9 and then dropped into the notch 10 for locking the links against movement. It is of course to be understood that the construction is complete as far as I have pr ceeded and described but for the purpose of preventing operation of the device by unauthorized persons I provide the padlock 13 that is adapted to snap into the hole in the keeper 14 and the hole in the latch 12 when the two holes 15 and 16 come into registra tion which takes place when the latch is properly seated in the notch.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that I provide a. safety device or guard of substantial construction which can be very readily extended and collapsed and when in extended position will be positively locked and guarded against tampering by unauthorized persons.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is: i
A safety device comprising a toggle joint member having a projection formed on one end of the member provided with a notch, a stationary casing having an opening for the passage of said projection, a latch pivoted within the casing and having its inner end adapted to be raised by said projection and then dropped into said notch, said latch having its other end projecting out of the casing and having an opening, a keeper on the casing having an opening to align with the opening in the latch when the inner end of the latch is engaged in the notch and a look engaged with the keeper and latch for holding said latch in its engagement with said notch.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
