Be it known that I, URIEL A. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at vi arren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Window Scaffold or Seat, of which the following is a ,s eeificati'on-- 4 y The present invention relates to a window scaffold for use in washing or otherwise cleaning windows, and aims to provide a novel and improved devicepf this character which can be arranged upon the outside of a window andbe efficiently attached to the frame thereof to permit the convenient washing or cleaning of the window.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a scaffold arranged in the form 'of a seat, said scaffold having a pair of arms attached thereto for engaging the facing strips of a window frame, said arms having portions thereof rounded for eliminating a sharp or pointed contact with the window frame when the device is applied to window frames of various thicknesses, said arms also having their contacting sides provided with a layer of soft material for preventing marring or disfiguring of the facing strips.

A further object of the invention is to provide a scaffold constructed in the form of a window seat having a back support pivotally connected thereto and arranged for supporting the back of the user when the device is in use, and also arranged for swinging on its pivot in order that the device may be folded into a compact form when not in use.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a window scaffold or seat of the kind indicated, which is simple and substantial in construction, which can be manufactured economically, and which will be thoroughly efficient and practical in use.

In carrying out the invention, the numerals 10 and 11 indicate a pair of supporting beams arranged in parallel spaced relation to each other, constructed of wood or like material, and each having a portion thereof on opposite or outer sides cut away, as at 12, for receiving metallic extension strips 13 and 14 carried by the arms 15 and 16, which are arranged for engaging the window frame. The upper horizontal edges of the beams 10 and 11 are notched, as at 17, for receiving the opposite ends of the cross strips 18, which form the seat of my improved scaffold, said strips being secured in such notches by means of screws 19, or other securing elements.

On the opposite ends of the beams 10 and 11 from whichthe arms 15 and 16 extend are provided a pair of hinges 20 and 21 for pivotally connecting a back rest to said beams. rlrranged in the beams 10 and 11 and the extensions 13 and 14 of the arms 15 and 16 are provided openings 29 through which extend the opposite ends of supporting bars 30, said bars having the portions thereof extending through said beams and extensions threaded for receiving a pair of nuts 31 and at each end thereof for engaging the opposite siees of the beams and extension members in order that said bars may be rigidly secured to said members to prevent relative movement of one beam and extension with relation to the other beam and extension.

The arms 15 and 16 extend lightly up ward and towards each other as they project from the extensions 13 and 14, and have large plates 83 and 3d formed on their terminals arranged at right angles thereto for engaging the facing strips on the inner sides of window frames. By inclining the arms upwardly the same will conform to the general incline of various window sills and rest thereupon, whilethe extending of the arms inwardly 'towads each other permits a wider seat to be positioned on the outside of the window frame. The upper ends of the plates 33 and 34- are curved or rounded as at 35, away from the facing strips of the window frame, in order to eliminate a sharp or point contact thereof with the facing strips, which would tend to mar the same, as the strain is placed upon the upper ends of the plates 83 and Set when a weight is supported upon the seat of the scaffold. By referring to Figure 2 which illustrates my device in an operative position, it will be noted that the weight of a person on the scaffold willtend to rock the same so that the upper portions of the plates 33 and 34 contact with the facing strips. In order to prevent marring or disfiguring of the facin g strips, I have curved the upper ends of thepla-tes 33 and-34c and have provided a layer of soft, yieldable material on said plates, which will also tend to eliminate upward sliding movement of the plates on the facing strips. I

\Vhen it is desired to remove the scaffold or window seat from the window frame, the back support 22 is folded uponthe seat poi tion of the scaffold and the chain 10 dis connected from the hook 42 carriedv by the window frame, which will permit the device to be drawn inwardly through the window frame.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:

1. A. device of the character described adapted to be supported on a window frame, comprising a pair of spaced beams having longitudinal grooves provided therein, a pair of arms having right angularly bent portions for engaging the facing strips of a window frame, extension members carried by said arms and received in said longitudinal grooves formed in said beams, aseries of bars having their opposite ends extending through said beams and extension member's, means upon said bars for holding said extension members in saidgroovesformed in said beams, cross strips having their opposite ends attached to said beams for forming a platform, and a back support hingedly connected to said beams.

2. A device of the character described adapted to be supported on a window frame, comprising a pair of parallel spaced beams each having a longitudinal groove formed in the outer side thereof, arms having right angularly bent portions for engaging the facing strips of. a. window frame, extension members carried by said arms and received in: said grooves formed in saidbeams, cross bars having the opposite ends thereof ex tending through said beams. and extension members, said bars having theopposite ends thereof threaded, a pair of nuts arranged upon'each end .of ,each :bar. for .engagiing said er to oves bea -ms and extension v ne nbe us in ord member reptiles.
