UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK M. MORTON AND GORDON W. MORTON, 0F THOENIX CITY, ALABAMA.
DYE VAT.
Original application filed April 6, 1925, Serial No. 21,126. Divided and this application filed October 26,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK M. Monron and GORDON W. MORTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Phoenix City, in the county of Lee and State of Alabama, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dye Vats; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in dyeing apparatuses of the closed vat type and has reference more particularly to a novel. bottom structure, the present case being a division of our parent U. S. aplication, Serial No. 21126, filed April 6, 1925.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an exceptionally light, yet rigid bottom structure which will effectively drain .all dye to the dye outlet, the construction being such that a perforated false bottom for the vat may be readily removed for cleaning the subjacent bottom of the vat whenever this should be advisable or necessary.
The accompanying drawing discloses a side elevation partly in section, of a vat constructed in accordance with the invention.
The vat is designated by the numeral 1 and it is provided with an appropriate removable cover 2, preferably of the formation disclosed in the parent application above referred to, to receive dye liquor from an inlet pipe 2 and distribute it over the con tents of the vat.
In constructing the vat 1, we make use of a circular bottom plate 3 which declines from its center to its edge and is provided atsaid edge with a continuous upstanding flange 4:, the upper edge of this flange being in turn provided with an outwardly projecting horizontal flange 5. A dye outlet 6 is formed through the flange 4 and a boss 7 on the outer side of said flange, and the inclination of the bottom plate 3, is such as to effectively drain all dye to said outlet 6. The upper side of the plate 3 is provided with integral upstanding lugs 8 upon which a flat perforated false bottom plate 9 rests,
Serial No. 64,959.
said plate 9 having its edge portion disposed upon and supported by the upper edge of the flange 4. I
The plate 9 supports the stock tobe dyed and all downward pressure on said plate, when applying the cover 2 is transferred by the lugs 8 to the bottom plate 3, and the substantially conical shape of this bottom plate effectively reinforces it against any tendency to bulge downwardly, and as abovestated, this formation of the bottom plate 3 also serves to direct the dye liquor to the outlet 6.
A continuous side wall 10 rests on the flange 5 and is provided at its lower end with a similar flange 11 which is secured by bolts or the like 12 to said flange 5, said wall 10 surrounding the plate 9 to hold the latter in proper position upon the upper edge of the flange 4. Obviously, whenever advisable, the plate 9 'may be lifted out of place, so that the vat bottom 3 may be cleaned of any raw stock or the like which may have gained access thereto, through the perforations of the plate 9.
Excellent results are obtainable from the details disclosed and they are therefore preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, slight variations may be made.
We claim 2-- A dyeing apparatus comprising a vat bottom plate declining from its center to its edge and having at said edge an upstanding continuous flange formed with a dye outlet port, the upper edge of said upstanding flange having an outwardly projecting continuous horizontal flange, said bottom plate having upstanding lugs terminating in the same horizontal plane with the upper side of said horizontal flange, a flat perforated false bottom plate resting on said lugs and said upstanding flange, and a vat wall surrounding said false bottom plate and secured to said horizontal flange.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto affixed our signatures.
FRANK M. MORTON. GORDON W. MORTON.
