PLUMB-BOB CARRIER.
Application filed April 17, 1922. Serial No. 553,861.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THoMAs C. OLoperi- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in PlumbBob Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a plumb bob carrier and has for its object the provision of a carrier for plumb bobs whereby plumbing from one surface to another surface above it may be accomplished accurately and quickly.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a carrier for plumb bobs of means for accurately and quickly plumbing from one surface to another above it and of means for shifting the point of plumbing from one point to another.
Another object of the invention the provision of a carrier of the class described and embodying means whereby the cord attached to the plumb bob may be easily and qulckly taken up or let out.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The inventions consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood from a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of the specification and in which,

The invention is designed for use in aligning layouts on an upper surface with the layout on the surface beneath and. servesto facilitate the plumbing of such layouts with each other. A common method of use is the plumbing of layouts made on the floor of a building with layouts to be made on the ceiling, although it is apparent that the device may be used for plumbing any kind of work from the lower surface to one directly above it.
At the present time when it is desired to plumb from a mark on a lower surface to a taken on subpoint on the upper surface it is necessary that one operator hold the end of the plumb line against the upper surface and another operator place the plumb-bob point on the point plumbed from. In order to do this it is necessary that the plumb line he held in the hand of the operator and it is usually allowed to depend from the tip of the thumb, the suspension being such that the plumb line is not held against the upper surface directly above the point plumbed from. The result is that the operator must guess the exact point on which to make the necessary indicating mark. In making this mark the operator has nothing to guide the pencil while making the mark so that oftentimes the point plumbed to is not even the point which the operator-has approximated.
To overcome these difficulties and to provide a positive means of marking a point directly over the point of the plumb-bob I have provided the present invention. The preferred form of construction comprises a shell or box-like structure 9 provided with an upper or plumbing wall 10, which has a pro]ection 11 overlapping the upright rib 12. The lower wall of this shell also has an overlapping portion 13, the vertical edges of which extend beyond the outer or vertical edges of the portion 11.
Journaled in the side walls 15 and 16 is a shaft 14 which is provided with a crank 17, said shaft being fixedly mounted to a spool 23, positioned in said shell and guided by suitable guide members 23. The plumb-line 18 is attached to the spool and is projected through a hole formed in the member 12. Formed in the member 13 is a hole 20 which is in alignment with the corner of the member 11. Formed in the member 13 at the op posite side thereof, is a hole 21 which is in alignment with other corner of portion 11. Extending longitudinally of the portion 13 is a slot 22 which is connected with a restricted neck to each of the holes 20 and 21, thus affording a means for the easy transfer of the cord 18 from one hole to another, said cord 18 being attached to the plumb-bob 19.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5, I have provided the spool which is mounted upon a suitable shaft 2 1, journaled in bearings positioned in the shell, with a spiral spring which operates so as to cause a winding of the cord when the dogs are in disengagement with the cams 26, said dogs 27 being pivotally mounted and adapted for operation similar to the dogs used on Window shades.
In operation the device is placed in position so that the plumb bob point is directly over or on the point to be plumbed from. The operator then places the shell or boxlike structure against the surface to be plumbed to. The respective corner of the portion 11 is then in alignment with the point plumbed from. The operator can then make a mark along the proper edges of the portion 11, the two lines so made determining the point directly in alignment With the point. plumbed from. It is thus seen that there can be very little chance. of varying from the real point of alignment and that the operation is more quickly performed than by the method now used. It may be necessary in some kinds of work to use one corner of the portion 11 and to use the other corner in other kinds of Work. When it is desired the cord 18 may be shifted from one corner to the other by forcing the same through therestricted neck and then sliding in through the slot 22.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction I do not wish to limit myself to the precise forms of structure shown but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
'1. A plumb-bob carrier comprising means for suspending a plumb-bob, said means having a plurality of suspension points; and a member having a marking point in vertical alignment with each of said points of suspension, when in operative position.
2. A plumb bob carrier comprising a shell having suspension points on one of the walls thereof, the opposite Wall thereof having meetin edges determining points in vertical alignn'ient with each of said suspension points, when in operative position.
3. A plumb-bob carrier having a suspend= ing member provided with a plurality of suspension points, each of said points being in communication with another by n'icans of a slot; and amember having a point of marking in vertical alignment with each of said suspension points, when in operative position.
