PAPER-MAKING MACHINE.
Application filed September 8, 1922. Serial No. 586,848.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -ALoNzo ALDRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of lVisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper-Making Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to paper making machines, particularly of the kind known as F ourdrinier. machines, and to a type or form thereof in which the table is moved laterally or sidewise in order to permit the application of a new wire to it.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and advantageous form of Fourdrinier machine, particularly of the class specified.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel and advantageous means for accommodating the lateral or sidewise movement of the table out from its normal position to receive the new wire and back to normal position with a new wire in place.
Other objects of the invention are to secure simplicity in construction and effectiveness in operation.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 1s a side elevation of apaper making machine of the F ourdrinier variety embodying my present invention;

The couch end of the table IS supported by a post or pedestal 6 having a pivotal rocking connection 7 with the end of the table and the breast roll end of the table is supported by flexible connectors or cables 8 whose lower ends are provided with links 9 to engage hook members 10. The ropes or cables 8 are connected with wind lass devices and operating mechanism therefor (not shown) by which the breast roll end of the table may be raised and lowered.
The .front end of the table. is provided with a series of legs or supports 1111 provided at their lower ends with wheels or roller 1212. Tracks 13-13 are arranged in the floor 14 of the building containing the machine so that the rollers 12 may roll upon the tracks 13 when the machine table is lowered sufiiciently to place the rollers 12 on tracks 13. Preferably rollers 12 are provided with an annular projection 15 and tracks 13 with the groove 16 to insure proper movement of the wheels on the tracks. The rear side or edge of the table is provlded with wheels or rollers '17 norma ly resting on posts or pedestals 19 mounted permanently on floor 14, said posts 19 having track-like supporting surfaces at their upper ends to support the ends of th rollers or wheels 17.
Provision is made for supporting tracks to accommodate wheels or rollers 17 to permit of a sidewise or lateral movement of the table. For such purpose I-beams 22 may be used and may be supported by rear permanent posts 19 and also by supplemental posts 23 placed at the front edge of the machine, preferably one at each side of each of the legs 11. Thus when it is desired to move the table laterally in order to apply a new wire, I-beams 22 are extended between posts 23 and posts 19, thereby forming tracks for wheels or rollers 17, as shown in Fig.
The table may then be moved forwardly, in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 8, the wheels or rollers 17 traveling on tracks formed by beams 22 and the wheels or rollers 12 at the lower ends of legs 11 traveling on tracks 13. The table is drawn laterally preferably to such an extent that the wheels or rollers 17 come into position above the posts 23, as shown in Fig. 4; and rails 22 are then removed, thereby getting the table out of the way and affording ample free space to stretch a new wire in position so that when the rails are replaced and the table returned to its normal position the wire may bereadily applied.
Supplemental rear posts 39 are arranged in association with rear posts 19, said posts 39 having elevated rolls 40 in position above the track beam 22 when the latter is in position. Posts 19 also have rolls 19 in position to be below the track beams 22. Thus when said beams 22 are pushed into position, they will roll along rollers 19 and 40, thus facilitating their movement. Other posts 47 are placed in position in the rear of posts 39 to support the rear ends of beams 22. The posts 19 and 39 are preferably connected together by bracket members 41 connected by bolts 42 and 43 with the respective posts. Wheels 19 on posts 19 are preferably made adjustable by adjustable mountings 44 and adjusting screws 45 for adjusting the same.
For moving the table power means are preferably provided, as for example, an electric motor 25 which is mounted on the table as best shown in Fig. 7. This motor 25 1s gear connected with a rotary shaft 26 which has a worm or gear connection with another rotary shaft 27, which latter is in turn gear connected with a drive shaft 28 which extends along the rear side of the table and carries rollers 17 which rest on posts 23 and travel on tracks 22. Thus operation of the motor 25 will permit the table to be moved laterally one way or the other.
The track members or surfaces 20 on posts 19 preferably have an elevated portlon 20 and an inclined portion 20 (Fig. 7), the lower end of the latter coinciding with the surface of the track provided by the to of the I-beam 22. Thus when the whee s or rollers 17 are upon the surfaces 20 they will be elevated slightly above the surface of tracks 22, but when said rollers are moved down the inclines 20 they will rest on I- beam tracks 22. In this way the rollers 17 may be very simply and easily lifted from tracks 22 to permit the insertion and withdrawal of the latter.
When the machine is running normally, it is as shown in Fig. 1, with the table elevated at its feed end sufficiently to clear supports to permit vibration and is held in position by connectors or cables 8 and the pivotal support 6. When desired to apply a new wire the deckel straps 30 with their wheels 31 and 32 and associated parts are elevated, as shown in 2, and the feed end of the table is sllghtly lowered by means of connectors 8 so that wheels or rollers 12 on legs 11 ma rest upon tracks 13. The I-beams 22 are t en placed between posts 23 and 19, as shown in Fig. 3. Motor 25 is then operated, whereupon the table moves forwardly, rollers 12 traveling on tracks 13 and rollers 17 moving down inclines 20 and upon tracks provided by beams 22 and thence along said tracks, this forward movement continuing until the table is clear to one side as shown in Fig. 4. The I-beams are removed and the new wire is stretched in lace by means of pipes 36-36, the couch rol 5 being elevated by a crane, so that the new wire 18 spread, as shown in Fig. 2, in position to allow the table to be moved back in its normal position (shown in Fig. 3). The tracks are then moved back and the motor 25 operated to move the table back'to the normal position shown in Fig. 3, whereupon the new wire is adjusted, the pipes 36 removed and couch roll 5, deckel' mechanism and other parts restored to their normal positions, the machine being then ready for further operation with the new wire.
Referring to the modification shown in Figs. 8, 9, and 10, in this arra ement elevated tracks 38 are provided in place of the lower or floor tracks 13 of the previous arrangement, said tracks 38 being conveniently supported on posts 39. The machine operates otherwise in the same manner as the previous machine.
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A Fourdrinier machine having a laterally removable table, legs on the front edge of the table having their lower ends provided with rollers, tracks on which said rollers may travel, other rollers on the rear of the table, posts at the rear of the table for said rear rollers, other posts at the front end of the table and tracks for said rear rollers extended between said front and rear posts and supported by the same, said rear posts having slightly elevated surfaces for said rear rollers and inclines from said elevated surfaces to the level of said tracks.
2. The combination with the laterally movable table of posts for supporting the same, said table being provided with wheels or rollers adapted to rest on said posts and said posts being provided with surfaces to support said wheels and also provided with downwardly inclined surfaces and tracks supported by said posts, the surface of said tracks being substantially coincident with the lower portion of saidinclined surfaces.
3. A Fourdrinier machine provided with a table having one side resting directly on posts and its other side supported by downwardly extending legs.
4. A Fourdrinier machine having osts for supporting one side of the table an also having supplemental posts to one side of the first mentioned posts and rollers carried by said posts for facilitating the movement of track beams, the rollers on one post being below the track beams and those on the other post above the same.
5. A Fourdrinier machine having posts for supporting one side of the table and also having supplemental posts to one side of the first mentioned posts and rollers carried by said posts for facilitating the movement of track beams, the rollers on one post being below the track beams and those on the other post above the same. i
6. A Fourdrinier machine having posts for supporting one side of the table and also having supplemental posts to one side of the first mentioned posts and rollers carried by said posts for facilitating the movement of track beams, the rollers on one post being below the track beams and those on the other post above the same, and still other posts positioned below the outermost ends of the tracks.
"7. The combination of a laterally movable table provided with rollers, tracks on which said rollers may travel and means for supporting the table so that said rollers" will be normally above said tracks, said supporting means being adapted to permit the table to be lowered to have the rollers rest on the tracks.
8. The combination of a laterally movable table provided with rollers, tracks onwhich said rollers may travel and means for supporting the table so that said rollers will be normally above said tracks. said supporting means comprising posts for said rollers having downwardly inclined surfaces on which the rollers may move to said tracks.
