UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIGE. A
ALPHONZO L ROY, OF LITTLE FALLS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT |N FOLDING BLiNos.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 157,075, dated November 24, 1874; application filed October 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPHoNzo LE ROY, of Little Falls, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Folding Blinds, of which the following is a specication:
My invention relates to a folding Slat-blind adapted for various uses, but intended more especially for application to the outside of car-windows as a dust and air guard.
The invention consists in pivoting the ends of the overlapping slats to the side rails in such manner that the slats and rails may be closed together, and in minor features, hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my blind extended for use, a portion being broken away in order t0 show more clearly the construction. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the blind folded or closed. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of the extended blind on the line w x. Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on the line y y. Fig. 5 represents a side view of the key by which the blind is operated.
A. A represent the slats of the blind, made of a straight flat form, and arranged to overlap each other, as usual, and pivoted at their ends to the vertical rails or side bars B and C, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 4, the parts being so arranged that when the blind is not required for use the outer rail, C, may be swung up against the inner one., B, and the slats thereby folded closely together in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the blind occupies a small space, and is out of the way. In order to protect the blind,.and render it ornamental when closed, the inner fixed rail B is made hollow, and with an open front, so that when the blind is closed the slats shut into the hollow rail B, and are concealed from the outer ends of which are pivoted to the movable rail C, as shown in Figs. l and 4. The bars orlinks E are inclined in the opposite direction from the slats, so that upon sliding the bar D endwise, when the blind is closed, the links E are caused to push the blind open and to hold it from closing, as shown in Figs. l and 4. The hollow rail B is provided in one side with a slot, a, to permit the insertion of a key, by which to slide the bar D, in order to open or close the blind.
It is intended to apply the blinds constructed as above to the outside of railroad-cars, in such manner as to project at right angles therefrom in front ofthe windows, for the purpose of deflecting the smoke, cinders, Snc., and preventing their entrance through the window into the car. In such case there will be a blind on each side of every window, one or the other to be used, according to the direction in which the car is moving. The frame of the window or the body of the ear will be made to answer the purpose of the inner rail, to support and receive the slats. The slat for the admission of the operating-key will be located inside of the car, so that the porter or other person who reverses the seats can at the same time adjust the blinds.
The blinds may be made of wood, metal, or any other material. Blinds'of metal constructed on my plan `may also be used for closing the windows and doors of stores, dwellings, and other buildings, and generally they may be used for all the purposes of the ordinary blinds.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A folding blind consisting ot' two side rails, or their equivalents, and a series of overlapping slats pivoted thereto, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of the hollow rail or body B, the rail C, and the pivoted slats A, as shown.
3. In combination with the rails B C and pivoted slats A, the sliding bar D and links E.
