Be it known that we, HARRY A. MCCLAIN and VVAITE MCCLAIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for Concrete Burial Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention relates to molds for forming cement vaults, such as are used in graves for burial vaults; and the objects of the improvement are to provide a mold formed 4of a plurality of sections adapted to mold Hat slabs to form the top, bottom, sides and l5 ends of a burial vault; ,each section ofthe mold comprising steel plate mounted upon a wooden platform and having its sides formed of angle irons, two adjacent sides being permanently connected to the bottom plate and the other two sides being arranged to be detachably connected to each other and to the adjacent ends of the permanent angle irons; an improved latch being provided for connecting the removable angle irons to each other and to the permanent angle irons; certain of the mold sections being provided with metal blocks or strips in its end portions to form rabbets vin the cement slabs to facilitate the assembling of the several slabs into a complete burial vault.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sevl eral sections of the mold;
Fig. 2, a perspective view of a complete burial vault, such as is produced in the improved mold; and
Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of the improved latch by means of which the assembled angle irons are connected together and to the permanent angle irons.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
The mold is designed to form a cement vault, such as illustrated in Fig. 2, the bottom and top members of the vault being similar and each comprising the central section 1 rabbeted at its ends as at 2 to engage the rabbeted ends 3 of the end sections 4.
Each of the end members 5 of the vault, is provided with the rabbeted ends 6 which receive the ends of the side members 7, each side and end member being formed of a single piece or slab.
The mold to which the invention pertains, V" comprises a plurality of independent sections for forming the several parts of the vault above described, and includes the side wall mold 8,' the end wall mold`9 and they central and sidek section molds 10, 11 andV 11L vwhich form the top and bottom walls of the vault.
Each of the mold sections includes a steel bottom plate 12 connected to a wooden platform 13, as by the bolts 14, spacedv cleats 15 l being transversely disposed across the under side of the wooden platform to strengthen the saine. ,Y Angle irons 1G and 17 yare fixed to one side and end respectively o'feach of Ithe'f' mold sections as by bolts 18er" the flike, forming a permanent side and end wall of each mold section. Detachably mounted 75 angle irons 19 and 20 form removable side and end walls respectively for each of the mold sections.
For the purpose of detachably securing the removable side and end members in place, an improved latch is provided comprising a hook 21 pivoted as at 22 upon one of the angle irons and arranged to be received within a notch 23 near the adjacent end of the other angle iron.
For the purpose of preventing the hook from being bent, a portion of the horizontal flange of the angle iro-n is severed longitudinally and bent upward as kshown at 24, the hook 21 when in the locked position, being received between said upturned portion 24 and the vertical flange of the angle iron, thus holding the hook securely against the side face of the angle iron to which it is connected and forming a right angle joint between the connected sections of angle iron.
For the purpose of forming the rabbeted ends 6 upon the end walls 5 of the vault, blocks or strips 25, preferably of metal, are mounted upon the bottom plate 12 of the mold section 9 adjacent to each of the end members thereof, and for the purpose of forming the rabbeted ends 2 and 3 upon the central and end sections of the top and bottom walls, similar blocks 25 are secured to the opposite end portions of the mold sec` tion 10 and to the inner end portion of each of the mold sections 11 and 11a.
In operating the mold to `form the vault, such as shown in Fig. 2, the removable angle irons 19 and 2O are mounted in position upon each of the mold sections by means of the hooks 21, and each mold section is placed in a horizontal position as shown in Fig. l. y
Each mo-ld section is then filled with concrete and by means of a straight `edge engaged with the upper edges of the angle irons, all excess cement is removed. .The molds are left in this position until the concrete is hardened, producing slabs of the proper size and shape for constructing the vault, each slab having smooth faces` and edges and sharp corners. l
In order to remove the finished slabs from the mold sections, the latches are opened `and the removable angle irons 19 and `20 are removed from the bottom plate, permitting the rslab -to slide out of the mold when the same is slightly tipped. j
Itis, of course, understood that while all `of the `mold sectionsnecesary to form the different shapes required in a single vault are illustrated in Fig. 1, that it would be necessary with a set such as illustrated in said lligure, to mold two slabs in each sec `tion to form a complete vault, the parts formed in one operation being one side, one 'end and either a top or bottom for a vault.

A mold comprising a bottom plate, angle irons permanently A'connected to two adjoining edge portions of the plate, angle irons detachably mounted at the other two edge portions of the plate, certain of said angle irons having hooks pivoted thereon, the adjoining angle irons having notches to receive said hooks.` j j v 2.
