IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH DUST-CAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,894, dated November 17, 12374 application filed March 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, OSCAR F. STEDMAN, of Westfield, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specificaiication.
The nature of my invention relates to the exclusion of dust and dirt from the movements of watches, and particularly to that class of watches known as Americain with full plate movements and hunting-case.
It is well known to watchmakers that much dust iinds itsway into the interior of the ease through the slots or openings made for the operation of the lifting and holding springs to the front cap of the case whenever the cap is opened, and, ii' not provided against, gets into the works of the lnovement, causing damage and much trouble. It is also known that the outside peripheral bands sometimes used are inconvenient, in consequence of the room needed for them inside, the case being occupied by the case-springs.
My invention, which is intended as an improvement upon the patent granted to myself July 30, 1867, No. 67,223, consists in combining the partial band located between the plates of the movement with the rabbeted edges of the plates and the segmental piece, which is fitted around the main wheel, in such manner that the ends of the band pass inside of, and are clasped upon, the ends of the segment, and at the same time both are supported firmly in position to complete the circle.
Figure l is a plan view of the movement. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the band and segment in position. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the segment-plate alone.
The segment d is fitted around the main wheel c, the outer edge, of necessity, projecting slightly beyond the periphery of the upper plate, and lies between the pillar-plate and the cap over the main wheel, and is connected therewith, and held in place by dowelpins or screws k. The ends of the segment are cut away upon the inside to correspond with the outer circle described by the baud b, and the points are provided with hooks f, projecting inwardly, and upon which the ends of the band b are caught by means of the slots g. The inner corners of the movement-plates are cut away or rabbeted at c, to form a recess for the band b to lie in between the plates, and at the same time provide a shoulder to keep the band in position, corresponding to the circular form ofthe movement. This rabbeted portion is deepened inwardly at the points a: opposite the junction of the band and segment, to allow the ends of the band to be passed over the hooks f when being placed upon the movement.
It will be seen that the band b can be easily removed by simply pressing the point inwardly to unloose the clasp, and that its natural tendency to spring outwardly will keep it rmly in place by means of the shoulder of the rabbeted recess c when once it is caught upon the ends of the segment.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the segment d, having catches formed upon its inner side, with the dust-band b, having its ends sprung outward against the inner ends of the segment, and the rabbeted movement-plates having recesses to allow the ends of the band to be moved in and out, substantially as shown and de scribed.
