ALMON D. MANLEY, OF WASHINGTON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAFT-EQUALIZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156.805, dated November 10, 1874; application filed October 23, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALMoN D. MANLEY, of Washington, in the county of Macoinb and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Three-Horse Equalizers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawiliigs, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of threehorse equalizers in which a leveris pivoted on the upper side near each end of a centerbar or evener, and one whiffletree attached to the outer end of each lever, and a center whiffletree attached to the inner ends of both levers; and the nature of my invention con sists in constructing the center-bar or evener straight on its under side, but beveled on the upper side from the center toward both ends, and providing the same with an upwardlybent center clevis, by which means any inclination to rock or draw down is prevented, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring tothe annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a rear view, of a threehorse equalizer embodying my invention.
A represents the center-bar or evener, with the levers B B pivoted on its upper side, one near each end. 0 O are two whiffletrees, attached to the outer ends of the levers B B, and D is the center whiffietree, attached by means of chains a a to the inner ends of both levers. The under side of th center-bar or evenerA is straight, while the upper side is beveled from the center both ways, to onehalf its thickness, more or less, at both ends, as shown in Fig. 2. This brings the point of draft of each outside whifflctree G as low as the middle of the centerbar, thus partially overcoming the inclination to rock over and draw down. This leaves only the high point of draft of the center whiffletree D to overcome, which is done by curving the center clcvis G upward, as shown, throwing the draftring I) as high as the top of the center-bar, or thereabout. This prevents entirely any inclination to rock over or draw down, thus making athoroughly practical and durable implement.
I do not claim a draft-evener composed of the bar A, levers B B, and whiffletrees (J C and D, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a three-horse equalizer consisting of the evener A, levers B B, and whiffletrees O C and D, the evener A, having its upper side beveled from the middle toward both ends, in combination with the upwardly-curved clevis G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth;
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of September, 1873.
ALMON D. MANLEY.
