JOHN N. TAYLOR, or DURANLD, ILLrNoIs.

Application filed February 6, 1911.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JOHN N. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durand, in the county of Winnebago, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in draft equalizers and the object of my invention is to provide a draft equalizer whereby three horses may be hitched abreast and a draft applied to a tongue.
A further object of my invention is to provide a draft equalizer which shall be simple in construction and which may be readily reversed whereby two of the horses may be upon either side of the pole.
With these and other objects in view my invention will be more fully described, illustrated in the drawings and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my equalizer, Figure 1 is a plan view of the equalizer attached to the tongue. Fig. 2 is a section through the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawings my equalizer will be seen to consist primarily of the doubletree lever 1 and the swingletree lever 2 having their inner ends pivotally connected by the connecting lever 3. A double link 4 is pivotally secured to the evener beam 1 adjacent its pivotal end by the bolt 5, while the double link 6 is similarly secured to the evener beam 2 by the bolt 7. A brace bar or base 8 has one of its ends inserted between the upper and lower members of the connecting link 3 while its other end is inserted between the upper and lower members of the free ends of the links a and 6. lhe evener is then secured to the tongue 9 by the bolt 10 passed through the upper and lower members of the link 3, the brace bar 8 and the tongue 9,-and by the bolt Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July so, 1915.
Serial No. 606,882.
11 passed through the end of the links 4 and 6, the other end of the brace bar 8 and the tongue 9.
The double-tree lever 1 is provided adja cent its free end, with the doubletree 12 which carries swingletrees 13, and the swingletree lever 2 is provided at its free end with a swingletree 14.
As will be readily seen from the above de scription the draft upon either side of the tongue will, by this construction, be at all times equalized by the draft upon the other side. As the equalizer is secured to the tongue by means of but two bolts, it may be readily removed and applied to another tongue, or reversed upon the same tongue in such a manner that the two horse evener beam will lie upon the side of the tongue which was previously occupied by the one horse beam. It will further be seen that the device is composed of but six members, namely, two equalizer beams, a connecting link, a brace bar, and two brace links. If desired the device may be further simplified by omitting the brace bar 8 but as this would necessitate the use of spacer blocks between the upper and lower members of the link 3 and between the ends of the links 4 and 6 I prefer to use the brace bar 8, as it gives additional rigidity to the equalizer.
In constructing the equalizer I prefer to make the link 4 somewhat shorter than the link 6 in order that the equalizer beam 1 will be somewhat to the rear of the equalizer beam 2, by this means the swingletrees 13 are brought in alinement with the swingletree 1-1 and all three of the horses will be abreast.
What I claim is In a draft equalizer the combination with a draft tongue, of an obliquely arranged lever pivotally mounted on the tongue and having a longer and a shorter portion, a longer evener bar pivotally connected at its inner end to the shorter end of the oblique lever, a shorter evener bar pivotally con nected at its inner end to the end of the longer portion of the oblique lever, a double tree connected to the outer end of the longer rearwardly oi the oblique lever, the remainbar, aosWingle tree connected to the outer shorter evener bar adjacent the inner end 10 end of the shorter bar, and a pair of links thereof.
of unequal length pivotally connected to- In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, gether at one end and to the draft tongue in presence of two Witnesses.
ing end of the shorter link being pivotally JOHN TAYLOR connected to the longer evener bar adjacent its inner end and the remaining end of the longer link being pivotally connected to the WVitnesses:
