ELECTRIC AERIAL ADVERTISING MEANS.
Application led January To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES S. TRIP- rEDA and ANTHONY J. DICHIARO, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of N ew York7 have invented a new and 1mproved Electric Aerial Advertising Means, of which the following is a description.
Our invention relates to aerial advertising in which a balloon is employed to suspendy a sign.
The general object of our invention is to provide aerial advertising means of the type referred to embodying means to control the rising of the balloon to determine the height to which it will carry the sign and also to provide means whereby the sign will becaused to have a revolving movement to display the sign through a circle in the sky that the sign may be visible from all points.
rIIhe manner and means whereby the above and other objects are attained will be readily understood fromthe specific description of the illustrated example of our invention.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming al part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.y

a drum 16 the shaft 17 of-which has bearings in a fork 18 of a turnable standard 19 the lower reduced end 20 of which passes through a frame 21 and through a base frame 22 to which said standard is swivelled, the standard terminating in a stud 23 threaded to receive a nut 24 for effecting the swivel connection with the base 22. The connectiony between the cable 15 and the sign in the illustrated example is as follows: Said cable at its upper end is secured to triangular element 25 from which guys 26 extend to the sign 10. The numeral 27 indicates the electric lamps for illuininating the sign 10. The conductors 28 lead to the lamps 27 from a conductor cord or cable 29, winding on a drum 30 the shaft 31 of which has bearings in a forked bracket 32 sleeved as at 33 to standard 19. Sleeve has a notch 34 to engage a lateral projection 35 on standard 19 to constrain the bracket 32 to turn with the standard 19 as hereinafter referred to. The bracket 32 is adapted to be raised on the standard 19 to a dotted line position indicated in Figure 8 and when in the raised position said bracket 32 is supported byy a prop 36.
The numeral 37 indicates an electric motor conventionally shown on the shaft of which at one end is a pulley 38. A belt 39 may run over the pulley 38 and over a pulley 138 on the shaft 31 of the drum 30 on which the conductor cord winds. A friction clutch 40 is provided in association with the pulley 138 and is formed on a clutch lever 41 fulcrumed to an arm 42k on the bracket 32.
The opposite end of the shaft of motor 37 from that on which the pulley 38 is mounted is formed with a worin 43 meshing with a worin wheel 44 rigid with which kis a bevel pinion-45 lmeshing with a bevel gear 46 on the standard 19. Said bevel gear 46 is shiftable being slidable on the standard 19 when not held by a set screw 417 and thereby preventing any paying out of the cable.
The wires ot conductor cord 29 are connected `with a conductor arm 4S having a brush or roller 49 wiping over a ring 50 connected with which is a feed wire 51 from any souice or" electric supply (not shown). The ring 5() is separated by insulation 52 from the top of the frame 21. The numeral 513 .indicates a bralre band oitl lrnown form disposed about the standard 19 and 54 indicates the brake lever connected with said band.
On the drum 16 at the ends are gear wheels 55 and similar gear wheels 56 are provided on the ends ot' the drum 30. A pawl 57 is pivoted at 11S to the fork 18 and is adapted to be engaged with a ratchet pinion 58 rigid with thc gear wheel 55 and shaft 17 and a second pawl or dog 59,
Vadapted to engage the pinion 58, may also be employed said pawl or pawls when engaged with said pinion 58 serving to hold the drum 16 against turning about the axis of the shaft 17.
For assisting in revolving the sign 10 and with it the balloon 11 in a manner hereinafter explained, propellers 61') are eniployed at the ends ot the sign and driven by motors 61 conventionally indicated, said motors having conductor wires 128 leading thereto. The numeral 63 indicates slide panels bearing the letters ot the sign and removably held by guides 64; to the said sign 10 at the front.
lVith the above described assemblage, the balloon 11 may be allowed to rise by throwing otl' the belt 39 from the pulleys 38, 13S. At this time the gears 55 are in mesh with the gears 56 so that the cable 15 and the conductor cord 29 will pay out simultaneously. When the balloon has reached the desired height the gears 55 and 56 are thrown out of mesh by raising the drum shaft 31 with the drum 30 and gears 56 to vthe dotted line position shown in Figure 8, soy that there will be "no further paying out of the cables from the drums.
rlhe standard 19 is now caused to revolve by starting the motor 37, the standard being driven through the worin gears 43, 44- and the pinions 115, L1-6. The turning of the standard 19 and the drum 16 will twist the cable 15 until it is taut and the revolving ot the standard 19 and drinn 16 will then cause the sign 10 and the balloon 11 to revolve also. lllhen the sign 10 and balloon 11 start to revolve the electric cord drum 3,0 is lowered to cause the gears 55 and 56 to mesh and the turning of the motor will revolve the whole assemblage including the standard 19, drum 16, bracket 32, drinn 3() and the sign 10 and balloon 11. When the balloon is to be lowered set screw 47 is loosened and the mitre gear l16 is raised out ot' mesh with the pinion 45 to prevent drum 16 from being turned about the axis ot standard 19. rlhe belt 32 is put on the pulleys 3S, 138 and the motor 37 started whereby the belt 39 will drive the shaft 31 and through the gears 56, 55 will drive the drums 16 and 3() in a direction to wind in the cable 15 and conductor cord 29 so that the sign and balloon will be lowered.
It will be observed that the ends of the sign 10 are tapered to approximately an edge whereby tofcut into th wind as the sign is revolved irrespective of the direction ot' turning in response to the turning of the standard 19 or by the propellers 60, oi' both.
lVe would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a'practical embodiment oit' our invention, we do not limit ourselves strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since,manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without ldeparture trom the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In an aerial advertising means, a balloon, a sign connected, with the balloon to rise and fall therevvith,`a ground support, turnable means on said support, a connection between said balloon and sign and said turnable means, and means associated with said support to give turning movement to said turnable means and the said connection to impart turning movement to said balloon andI sign. f i
2. In an aerial advertising means, a sign, means to connect thesign with a balloon to be raised and lowered with the rising and falling of the balloon, winding means,` a cable winding on said winding means and connected with said sign, a support on which said winding means is mounted to turn bodily about a vertical axis, and actuating means to turn said cable drum and tthe winding means about said vertical axis to cause a turning of the sign through the instrumentality of said cable.
3. ln an aerial advertising means, a sign, means to connect said sign with a balloon to be raised and lowered with the rising and falling of theballoon, winding drums, a cable winding on one otl said drums and connected with said sign, electrical illuminating means associated with said sign, a conductor cord leading to the illuminating means and winding on the other of said drums, a drive connection between the drums for separately turning the drums about their own axes, the drinn tor the conductor cord adapted to be disconnected from the cable drinn, and a support on which said cable driniii is mounted to turn bodily about a vertical axis, and actuating means for turning said cable drum about said vertical axis.
4. In' aerial advertising means, a sign, means to connect the sign with a balloon to be raised or lowered with the rising and falling of the balloon, an electric lighting means to illuminate said sigma conductor cord leading to said illuminating means, a winding drum onto which said conductor winds, a second drum, a cable winding on said second drum and connected with said sign, a revoluble standard on which the cable drum is mounted soy as to be turned bodily with the standard about the vertical axis of the latter, a motor, means to establish drive connection between the motor and the drum of the conductor cord, and means to establish drive connection between the revoluble standard and the motor to turn said standard.
5. In aerial advertising means, a sign, means to connect the sign with a balloon to be raised and lowered with the rising and falling of the balloon, an electric lighting means to illuminate said sign, a conductor c axis of the latter, a motor, means to establish drive connection ybetween the motor and the drum of the conductor cord, and means to establish drive connection between the revoluble standard and the motor to turn said standard; together with means to optionally establish or disestablish drive convnection between the two' drums.
