STATES;
JOSEPH CHVOJKA, OF' PI-IILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
AERIAL{ Anvnnrisnn;
Application filed January My invention relates to new and useful improvements in an aerial advertiser, and has for its primary object to provide in a device of this character, a sign having means to revolve the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide an aerial advertiser including'a balloon, a cable or other-equivalent means for.
to provide means supported by the cable for;
illuminating the sign.
With these ends in View, this invention consists inthe details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and. then specifically designated by i the claims.
referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a side elevation-of the aerial advertiser constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, is an enlarged sectional elevation of the sign elements.
Fig. 3, is a bottom plan view of Fig. 2 with the light shield. removed'and a portion of the sign broken away.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents a balloon of usual well known construction and of any suitable size and shape suited for the purpose. About this balloon is a harness which includes a desirable number of straps and for convenience of illustration this harness is shown as including a horizontal strap 3 passing around the longitudinal center of the balloon and a plurality of straps 4 passing around the smaller circumferences at different points.
To this harness and more particularly the central strap 1 is attached one end of a cable 5 the other end of which may be wound upon a drum 6 fixed to a shaft 7 journalled in 24, 1925. Serial No. 4,417.
suitable bearings S of a support 9 and on pulley 12 on'the shaft of the electric motor 13 or equivalent prime mover whereby the balloon may be let outor withdrawn as the case may be. In. order to further strengthen the connection between the cable and balloon a plurality of guides 14 are provided which. are fastened to the. harness at suitable'points and-to the cable. 5 some distance below the balloon.
On the cable 5 at a suitable distance below the balloon is fi'xed a bearing 15 to receive one end of the tube 16which freely rotates on said bearing and the other end of said; tube is connected with one ring 17 Off ball bearing while the other ring 18 thereof is having connection with a socket 20011 the electric motor 21. The motor 21 is supported by the cable 5 and ashere shown portions of said cable pass around both sides ofthe 19 to suitable openings where the cable again continues as a whole through the tubular support 19, the tube 16 and the bearings 15. I
secured to upright ribs 241 while adjacent the lower ends of said ribs are secured" the outer-ends of the angular arms25, the inner ends of which are fixed to-"the tube or hub 16 adjacent its lower end.
The lower arms are bent upward intermediate their ends in order to provide for their passage about'the illuminating devices to be presently described. The ribs 24 converge toward their lower ends so that the sides of the skeleton frame are inclined and said sides of this frame are covered with a suitable material 26 preferably transparent or translucent and I have found that a celluloid material is desirable as it has considerable strength, is light and sufliciently transparent to permit the penetration of light rays as well as making a good base for painting or otherwise delineating advertisements thereon.
As the tube or pipe 16 is journalled to revolve and since the sign is fixed thereto the latter will revolve with the pipe and in order suitably mounted on the tubular support 19 motor and'then enter the tubular support' to revolve said sign a desired number of revolutions per minute I fix a gear 27 to the tube 16 which meshes with a gear 28 on a shaft 29 carried by the stationary tubular support 19 while in fixed relation to the gear 28 is a pulley 30 over which passes a belt 31 also passing over a pulley 82 on the shaft of the motor 21.
In order to illuminate the sign a plurality of brackets 33 are suitably fixed to the stationary tubular support 19 and projecting into the sign where illuminating devices 3%, such as electric lamps are suitably mounted upon said brackets. The wires for supplying current to the electric lamps 84 and the motor 21 supply the necessary electric current from a suitable source of electric energy such as the surface lines of a building and these wires may, if found desirable, be wrapped about the cable or other parts leading to the points of use.
As it is contemplated to position the advertisements on this device in an elevated position it is desirable to shut off the lights from the view of observers I provide a shield 35, which as here shown, may consist of a flat piece of materialfixed to the lamp brackets and of suflicient size to extend across the lower end of the sign.
7 From the foregoing description it will be readily noted that when the motor 13 is operated in the proper direction the cable 5 will unwind from the drum 6 and the balloon 2 will ascend to the desired height. After setting the balloon the current may be turned on to the motor 21 so that the sign will be revolved in order that the advertising matter will be visible to persons below in all directions and during dark days or at night the current may be turned on to the lamps 3% so that the sign will be Visible durin darkness as well as in the daytime.
y providing the revolvingsign with wings 36 the power of the wind may be utilized for revolving said sign when the motor 21 is out of order or said motor may be entirely eliminated.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and useful is 1. An aerial advertising device including a balloon, a cable, means for connecting said cable to the balloon, means for reeling said cable in and out, an electric motor supported by the cable, a tubular support connected with the motor and through which the cable passes, said tubular support being in fixed relation to the cable, a tube on the cable above the tubularsupport, a ball bearing between the tube and said tubular support,
a bearing fixed'on the cable and projecting into the upper end of the tube, driving means for transmitting motion from the motorto said tube, a skeleton sign frame connected with said tube to revolve therewith, transparent material covering the sides of said sign frame on which advertisements may be do lineated.
2. An aerial advertising device including a balloon, a cable, means for connecting said cable to the balloon, means for reeling said cable in and out, anelectric motor supported by the cable, a tubular supp-(vet connected with the motor and through which the cable passes, said tubular support-being in fixed relation to the cable, a tube on the cable above the tubular support, a ball bearing between the tube and said tubular sup port, a bearing fixed on the cable and pro jecting into the upper end of the tube, driving means for transmitting motion from the motor to said tube, a skeleton sign frame connected with said tube to revolve there with, transparent material covering the sides of said sign frame on which advertisements may be delineated, brackets fixed to the tubular support with their upper ends projecting into the sign frame, electric lumps on the upper ends of said brackets, and a shield disposed across the lower end of the sign frame and supported by the brackets.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto afiixed my signature.
I JOSEPH (JHVOJKA.
