To all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that I, CLAIRE M. LEE, a citizen ofthe United States of America, and a resident of Elyria in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Gas Lighter, of which the following'is a description.
'My invention relates to a gas lighting device and particularly to a device in the form of an attachment for gas stoves and comprising a pilot light as well as means dependent on the placing of'a vessel on the gas stove for opening the gas supply to the burner.
The general object of my invention is to provide adevice of the indicated character improved in various particulars especially with relation to the means for opening or cutting off the supply to the pilot light and the main burner tube. a j
A morespecific object is to provide a device constructed offew parts of simple form and of a character to insure the unfailing operation of the gas controlling means.
The nature of my invention andits distinguishing features and advantages will clearly. appear as the description proceeds.

In the illustrated example of my invention the same is shown in connection with a burner A of a gas stove; 13 indicating the inlet pipe for the mixture of air and gas; G, the usual air control means to produce a Bunsen flame and D the main gas pipe having a pipe connection E with the fuel inlet pipe.
Instead of the usual gas cook interposed in the connectingpipe E, I provide in no a. cordance with my invention a novel gas cock designatedgenerally by .the numeral 10, -11 designating the plug of the gas cook equipped with a handle 12 as in the usual cocks of gas stoves. The gas cock 10 has the usual main outlet 13 leading to gas connection E and said outlet 13 and the pipe connection E with the device C are of the from the main outlet.
The plug 11 of cock 10 has an axial blind bore 16 extending from the lower end there of from which blind bore 16. leads the main gas outlet 18. To conduct the gas through plug 11 to. main outlet 13 and pilot outlet nipple 14, said plug 11 is formed with a transverse bore 17 and is also formed with a peripheral arcuate passage 18 c01nmunieating at one end with bore 17. hen the cook 10 is closed as in Figures 1, 3 and 4, the bore 17 is transverse to the pipe connection E and said bore 17 and arcuate passage 18 are cut off from the gas supply. hen the plug 11 is turned to open the cock 10, the transverse passage 16 is in line with the pipe connection E and therefore with the main gas outlet 13 of the cock 10. Since the arcuate passage 18 communicates with the transverse bore 17 the pilot light 14 is supplied through said transverse bore 17 and passage 18 with the opening of the cock.
The mere turning of the plug 11 in the opening of the cock 10 supplies only the pilot light nipple 14 with gas by reason of the fact that a valve 19 disposed in the bore 16 normally cuts off the communication through the transverse passage 17 of plug 11 to the outlet 13. The valve 19 is subject to the placing of a vessel on the burner A for a longitudinal movement of said valve in the axial bore 16 for uncovering the main gas outlet 13.
For opening the valve 19 by the placing of a vessel on the burner A I employ an elongated lever bar 20 which is formed with a loop or yoke 21 at one end, said yoke embracing the lower end of the cock 10. Said lower end of the cock 10 is fitted with a sleeve 22 having a closed lower end or head 23. A cotter .pin 24 or the like is passed through the hub 25 of head 23 and through the valve stem 26 of valve 19. Within the sleeve 22 is a cap 27 threaded onto the lower end of the plug 11 and coiled about the valve stem 26 is a spring 28 bearing at its upper end against the valve 19 and resting at its lower end in the bottom of the cap 27. Thus, the spring 28 has a tendency to lift the valve 19 to a raised position closing the main gas outlet 13. On the end of the lever 20 adjacent the lever A there is secured to said lever a standard 29 which is advantageously adjustably secured to said lever. In the illustrated example the lower end 30 of standard 29 is directed laterally about right angles to the standard and passed through one of a longitudinal series of holes 31 in lever 20, the connection being completed by a cotter pin 32 or the like passed through said end 30.
The connection between the lever 20 and the sleeve 22 is by means of trunnions 33 and yoke 21, said trunnions directed laterally inward and entering holes 34 in the sides of sleeve 22. The lever 20 is fulcrumed by means of an element 35 preferably formed of wire and engaged by its ends 36 with the sides of yoke 21. Said element 35 has a downward bend 37 beneath the pipe connection E. Thus, the element 35 at the lower ends 36 thereof constitutes a fulcrum for the lever 20 by reason of the pivotal connection of said ends with the yoke 21. For manually depressing the yoke 21 for rocking lever 20 should occasion require, the element 35 is formed with depressing members 38 at the top thereof against which members 38 pressure may be exerted by the fingers of the operator.
With the above described assemblage, when it is desired to use the burner A for heatin a utensil, the plug 11 of cook 10 is turner to the open position. This will supply gas from connection E through anend of transverse bore 17 and arcuate passage 18 to nipple 14 and the pilot-light tube 15 and the gas issuing from said pilot tube is manually ignited. The gas is still cut off from the main outlet 13 and mixing device C and therefore from the burner A by the plug valve 19 which cuts off said outlet 13. The pilot light having been lit the vessel is placed on the burner A and in doing so the standard 29 and lever 20 will be depressed from the full line positions of Figure 1 to the dotted line position. In the depression of the lever 20 said lever will rock on the element 35 as a fulcrum and therefore the sleeve 22 will be carried downwardly and will carry the valve 19 downwardly against the resistance of spring 28, thereby uncovering the main outlet 13. When the vessel indicated at F is removed from the burner A, the spring 28 will tend to lift the lever and the standard 29 as Well as giving a closing movement to the valve 19. However, spring 28 need not be depended upon to lift the lever 20 since the member 38 on the fulcrum element 35 may be depressed to depress said element 35 and the yoke 21 for restoring the lever 20 and standard 29 to .the full-line position of Figure 1.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A gas lighting attachment for gas stoves, said attachment comprising a lever, a member on said lever adapted to be projected through a gas burner to be depressed by a vessel when the latter is placed on the burner, a gas supply pipe to direct gas to the burner, a gas cook in said supply pipe, means to fulcrum said lever adjacent said cock, said cock having a turnable plug formed with a transverse bore adapted to be brought into or out of register with a supply pipe by turning the plug and having also a slot communicating with the transverse bore, a pilot light tube extending longitudinally at a side of said lever, said plug having an axial bore communicating with said transverse bore and the body of the cock having a main gas outlet brought into or out of communication with the transverse bore by the turning of the cock plug, as well as an outlet to said pilot light tube, the turning of the plug serving also to bring the slot thereof into or out of register with the outlet to the pilot light tube, a valve longitudinally movable in said axial bore to close the transverse bore against the flow of gas therethrough, and a con nection between said lever and said valve to move the valve to open position and permit flow of gas through the transverse bore when the lever is depressed.
