' Be it known that I, FR NIQ-ELAGUFF, a citizen of the United-States, residing at tate of Illinois, have'invented new and useful Improvements in Valve Mechanism, of which the-following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves and more particularly to an automatic valve mechanism for controlling the flow of gas to a burner on a gas stove and an object of the invention is to provide an automatic valve structure which will be time and labor sav ing and which is constructed so that when a cooking utensil is placed above the burner the flow of gas to the burner will be auto matically permitted and when the cooking utensil is removed from the burner the flow of gas will be automatically cut off.
Other obj ects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation partly in section of the improved valve structure showing the cooking utensil mounted thereon and showing the valve arranged to permit the flow of gas therethrough.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to the Figure 1 showing the flow of gas through the valve cut off.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing a fragment of an ordinary or approved type of gas stove is shown at A which embodies the burner B to which the mixed gas and air flow through a suitable pipe C while the gas or combustible fuel enters the pipe 0 through the mixer D and through a nipple 1 which is connected to a valve casing 2. The valve casing 2 is provided with an externally threaded nipple 3 directly opposite the nipple 1 and the nipple 3 is threaded into the manifold or gas supply pipe 4 of the stove A. A sliding valve 5 is mounted within a valve casing 2 and is provided with a transverse passageway 6 adapted to align with the bores 7 of. the nipples 1 and 3 to permit passage of gas from the manifold at to the burner B. A valve stem 8 is carried by the sliding valve 5 and projecting through the removable adjustable head 9 threaded in one end of the casing 2 and has cars 10 on its lower end to which is pivotally connected a lever 11. A disc 12 is mounted about the rod 8 and an 1 qSpecificaf-ion of Letters Patent.

The lever 11 is pivotally supported, intermediate its ends as shown at 14:, by a suitable pivoting support 15 which is clamped or mounted as shown at 16 upon the pipe C. The end of the lever 11, remote from its pivotal connection with the ears 10, has a lateral boss 17 thereon which is internally threaded and adjustably receives the threaded end 18 of a stem 19 which projects upwardly through the center of the burner B and has a head 20 upon its upper end which projects through the central portion of the grate E of the stove A which is adapted to support the cooking utensil above the upper surface of the grate structure E as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing at which time the passageway 6 will be forced out of registration with the bores 7 However, when a cooking utensil, as indicated at F, is placed upon the grate structure E the weight of the cooking utensil will force the stem 19 downwardly rocking the lever 11 and tension the spring 13 and force the sliding valve 5 upwardly until the passageway 6 communicates with the bores 7' and the flow of gas to the burner B is established.
hen the cooking utensil F is removed from over the burner B the reflexing of the spring 13 will cut off the flow of gas to the burner B and move the parts to their normal positions.
The nipple 3 has a valve seat 21 formed at the entrance of its bore 7 into the manifold 4t and a valve cone 22 is provided for cooperation with the seat 21 to regulate the quantity of gas flowing to the burner B. A suitable threaded stem 23 carries the valve cone 22 and has a thumb nut 24 mounted thereon to facilitate adjustment of the valve cone 22 relative to the valve seat 21. A suitable approved type of stufling box, as shown at 25 may be provided to prevent leakage of gas about the stem 23. The tension of the spring 13 may be regulated by adjustment of the head 9. i
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that an attachment for gas stoves or ranges has been provided which will materially decrease the inconvenience and labor contingent with the use of gas stoves as well as one which will eliminate considerable waste of gas in that the flow of gas to the burner will be automatically cut off when the cooking utensil is removed from over the burner.
If it is so desired a pilot light or burner as shown at 30 may be associated in the usual approved manner with the burner B to cause ignition of the gas flowing to the burner B when the sliding valve 5 is operated.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In combination a gas burner, a valve controlling the flow of gas to the burner, a centrally pivoted lever arranged below the burner and having one end connected to the valve for operating the latter, a spring act ing against the lever, and a stem having screw threaded engagement with the other end of the lever and having its head portion arranged above the burner.
