To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL KALM, a citizen of the United States of America, and'a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Doorknob, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to door knobs particularly to interior metal door knobs.
The general object of the present invention is to provide a door knob possessing attractiveness and yet adapted to be produced at low cost. 1
The invention is characterized by an ornamental central element incorporated in the knob advantageously in the form of a mirror, and an important object also is to provide novel means for holding the ornamental center element in position in the shell of the door knob so that the mirror, or equivalent ornament of a character to lend brilliancy to the door knob, will be firmly held in position and so disposed as to be protected against knocks or blow to which the door knob is subjected when brought into contact with a wall or partition.
Specifically, the invention has in View the embodiment of thecentral ornamental element in the door knob in a manner to 'accord with the character and manufacturing operations employed in producing the metallic'shell.
The nature of my invention and its distinguishing features will more clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door knob embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a metallic shell 10 usually of brass may be produced by the usual methods well known in the trade, the shell having a tubular shank 11 in which the usual bushing is fitted for accommodating a knob spindle 13 held by the usual transverse screw 14.
The shell 10 is made with a central opening to receive the ornamental element and surrounding the central opening in the shell 10 is an annular flange 15 directed inwardly. The flange 15 provides an annular seat 16 and inward of said seat said flange 15 terminates in a tubular neck 17 coaxial with the shank 11.
Fitted in the flange 15 formed as described is the central ornamental element which comprises a disk mirror 18 or an equivalent ornament of glass or the like that will add brilliancy to the door knob. The ornamental element 18 is framed. The frame has an annular radially disposed zone 19 accommodated flatwise on the seat 16 of flange 15 as well as an inturned annular flange 20 serving to firmly clamp the element 18. The frame of the element 18 includes furthermore a tubular neck 21 which fits snugly in the neck 17. The inner neck 21 is formed with a plurality of protuberant members 22 which are adapted to snap into an annular depression or groove 23 in the outer neck 17 of flange 15.
In the preferred form the seat 16 and the radial zone 19 seating thereon are depressed materially within the plane of the front of the shell 10 and that the ornamental element 18 lies within said plane of the front of the shell 10, the purpose being to protect the element 18 against knocks when the knob is suddenly brought up against a wall or partition.
By the described structure a highly attractive door knob may be produced having pronounced strength and durability and at a cost to make it practical to install a door knob having brilliancy without involving the expense attendant on the installation of glass door knobs.
I would state in conclusion that While the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim. Having thus described my invention, I claim:
As an article of manufacture, a door knob comprising a shell having an open ing at the front thereof and having an inwardly directed annular flange at said front, said flange presenting a radial seat, and a neck directed radially inward from said seat; together with an ornamental central assemblage comprising an ornament and a frame therefor, said frame presenting a radial zone contacting with said seat, as well as means at the outer edge of said radial zone for clamping said ornament in position, the frame including an inwardly directed tubular neck at the inner side of the frame, said neck on the frame fitting within the neck of the flange on the shell, and coacting means on the respective necks of said frame and said flange to effect snapped engagement between said necks.
