PATENT OFFICE.
,Gus'rA'vE BLAIR, or ALBERT LEA, MINNESOTA.
LOCK.
Application filed June 8, 1923. .Serial No. 644,204.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvn BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Al bert Lea, in the county of Freeborn and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This-invention relates to a combination lock which is mainly designed for suitcases,
trunks and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a simple and eflicient form of lock which will have few parts and the combination of which is set 3y asingle rotary member.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illusrated in the accompanying drawings and pecifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the improved lock. I
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Figure 3 is an end view.
Figure 4 is a view of the keeper plate.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a view of the bolt.
Figures 8, 9 and 10 are views of the combination discs.
Figures 11, 12 and 13 are face views of these discs.
Figure 14 is a section on line 1411 of Figure 5.
111 these views 1 indicates the lock casing and 2 the bolt which is slidably mounted in the same and has one end projecting from one end of the casing, this projecting end being provided with a disc 3 whereby it can be actuated. The locking dogs 4 may be of any suitable form and they are connected with the bolt by the stem 5. A spring 6 on the bolt tends to hold the parts in looking position. The combination discs 7, 8 and 9 are rotatably mounted on the bolt and are held in spaced relation by the projections 10 on the casing. Keys 11 are formed on the bolt and each disc is provided with a key-way 12 for receiving a key on the bolt. Normally the key-ways are out of alignment with the keys so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the bolt but when the combina- Lion discs have been adjusted to place the key-ways therein opposite the keys the bolt can be retracted as the keys enter the keyways when the bolt is pushed inwardly. A slot 13 is formed in the casing through which the combination disc 7 appears, this slot permitting the disc to be rotated. The discs are provided with projections 14 whereby the rotation of the disc 7 will cause the discs 8 and ,9 to rotate so as to permit the three discs to be properly positioned to permit the keys to enter their key-ways. The rear end of the bolt is square and passes through a square opening in the rear of the case so as to prevent rotary movement of the bolt. The keeper plate is shown at 15, and said plate is provided with a slot 16 for each dog of the bolt.
From the above it will be seen that when it is desired to retract the bolt the disc 7 must first be rotated so as to place the three discs in a position where their key-ways will be opposite the keys on the bolt. Then the bolt is pushed inwardly against the action of its spring, the keys passing into the keyways during this action and thus the dogs are released from the keeper plate so that the case or other object upon which the lock is placed can be opened. As soon as the finger is removed from the bolt the spring will return it to locking position and. then by simply revolving the disc 7 in either direction the parts will be moved so that the look cannot be retracted again unless the discs are again set to the proper combination.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Vhat I claim is A lock of the class described comprising a casing, spaced projections therein, said casing being formed with a slot, abolt slidably mounted in the casing, locking dogs carried by the bolt a spring on the bolt for holding the dogs in looking position, spaced keys on the bolt, a series of disks rotatably and removably mounted on the bolt and having portions engaging between the projections, one of the disks being of larger diameter than the other disks so that it will engage the slot, said disk having keyways therein for receiving the keys on the bolt 10 and projections on the disks engaging each other so that the adjustment of the large disk through the slot will adjust the other disks.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GUSTAVE BLAIR.
