This invention, stated in its broadest terms, relates to coal burning furnacesl and has more' especial relation to the providing of a draft inducing conduit for insertion .in the furnace ashpit beneath the furnace fire box. ,f
The leading object of the present invention may be said to reside in the providing of a conduit of this character which is of simple and comparatively inexpensive construction; which may be readily applied to existing furnaces without change thereof by unskilled labor; which increases furnace draft; causes fuel upon the grate to burnV more uniformly; creates greater combustion; requires less furnace attention, and in general improvesI the general combustion conditions in the furnaces.
With this and other objects in View the invention consists of the novel features hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and sope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which:v

For the purpose of illustrating my invenf tion I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangef ment andorganization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, and with more especial relation to Fig. Li, vthe numeral l designates a coal burning furnace of any desired typethe ashpit being designated 2, and the fire boxdoor being designated 3.
Thel draftinducing conduit of the present invention which is 'best seen in Figlie adapted to be contained within the ashpit 2.l While it isnot e-ssentialit is nevertheless desirable to remove the ash pit door as disclosed in Fig.: 4. yThe draft in-` ducingconduit consists of' asheet metal structure having af top t and side walls 5 the bottom of the conduit being open, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The side walls 5 of the conduit are provided with atmospheric air egress openings designated 6. The top wall 4 of the conduit at the front thereof is provided with a wing 7 which is outwardly and upwardly extended; and each side wall 5 is provided with an outwardly directed wing 8. In use, with a conduit inserted through the door opening of the ash pit the wing 7 is bent into abutting relation with the front wall of the furnace 1, and the wings 8 are outwardly bent to abut against the furnace front wall. By this construction there is no seepage of atmospheric air between the furnace front wall and the side walls of the conduit so that all atmospheric air must pass into the conduit and thence through openings 6 to the fire box. The top wall of the sheet metal conduit at its rear is provided with a wing 9 and the side walls 5 are provided with wings 10 which wings may be readily bent outwardly to increase the draft at the rear of the ash pit so that the bed of coals at the rear of the furnace may be supplied with additional air for combustion purposes. As shown in Fig. 2, when the wings 9 and 10 are bent to closed position a central opening l1 is present so that a small quantity of atmospheric air may at all times pass to the furnace rear.
By the above arrangement and construction of parts increased draft is provided the bed of fuel in the fire box is more uniformly consumed, the bed of fuel burns to a finer ash, the furnace requires less attention, air is caused to more uniformly spread over the bed of fuel, a saving of coal is ef fected, and general furnace conditions are improved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In combination a furnace including its complemental ash pit, of a draft inducing conduit of sheet metal inserted through the door opening of said ash pit and extended beneath the furnace fire box, the conduit being provided with air vents in its side walls and having wall extensions at its rear capable of being bent to form a partial closure or a continuation of the conduit as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture a draft linducing conduit .for furnace ash pits comprising an elongated sheet metal structure having top and side walls and an open bottom, the side walls of said structure being apertured, and at least the front of said conduit being provided with wing portions bent outwardly substantially at right angles to said apertured side walls.
3. As a new article of manufacture a draft inducing conduit for furnace ash pits comprising an elongated sheet metal structure having top and side walls and an open bottom, the side walls of said structure being apertured, and wing portions at the front and rear of said conduit, the wings at the front of said conduit being bent outwardly at right angles to the apertured side walls of the conduit and the rear wings of said conduit being capable of being extended 1outwardly in parallelism with said side wa ls. 4. As a new article of manufacture a draft inducing conduit for furnace ash pit consisting of a sheet metal, elongated structure having top and side walls, and an open bottom, the side walls of said structure being apertured, said top and side walls at the front and rear of said conduit having extensions or wings adapted to be bent outwardly, said top walll at the conduit front being bent upwardly and said top .wall at the conduit rear being capable of heilig bent upwardly in the same plane with said top wall.
