To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE W. MUMMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Macomb and State of Michigan, have invented certain 1 in a retort or vaporizing chamber,
of burners one of which is located under the retort for generating purposes, and all of the burners being supplied with the combustible gas from a single retort, each burner except the one under the retort being provided with a valve whereby it may be used or not as desired.
The invention includes improved means for mixing air with the gas and for distributing the mixture to the respective burners.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a top plan view partly in section of the multiple burner. Fig. 2 is a view partly 1n vertical section on the'line 2-2 of Fi 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 26 indicates a liquid fuel pipe line from any suitable tank or supply. This is controlled by a valve 3, and leads to a vaporizer or retort 1, consisting of three parallel pipes connected at one end to the supply line and discharging at the other end into a down wardly curved mixing chamber 10, the enlarged end of which. where it is connected to the vaporizer, being provided with air inlet holes'17. An additional air inlet is provided thru a depending branch pipe 27 havinga perforated bell mouth 28 directed downwardly and thru which air will be drawn by the flow of the mixture in the mixing chamber 10. A metal shield 16 is fastened around the inlet end of the mixing chamber to prevent flame being drawn into the mixing chamber from the burner under the retort.
The lower end of the mixing chamber terminates in a plurality of branches to which respectively are connected pipes 10, 11, 12 and 13 leading respectively to burners 5, 6, 7 and 8, the former of which is located under the retort 1 and the others of which are disposed around the central body, a four burner gang being shown. The supply from the mixing chamber to the burner caps 6, 7 and 8 is controlled by valves 18, in the pipe connection to each burner, and these valves can be opened or closed according to the burners it is desired to use.
The connection between the mixing chamber 10 and the branches to the respective burners contains a conical spreader 14. the apex of which is directly under the lower end of the mixing pipe 10, and this spreader serves to deflect the gases toward the respective branches, whereby a supply is furnished to each burner.
The operation of the retort may be started by any suitable starting device such as alcohol pouring into the burner cap 5, and after the retort begins to function said burner provides the heat necessary to continue vaporization. The gas flowing from the vaporizer is mixed with air fromthe mixing chamber 10 and the combustible mixture is supplied by the branches to the burners being used. Since all the burners are supplied from a single generator it is unnecessary to provide a separate generator for each burner. The parts may be made of suitable metal and the invention is not confined to the special number of burners or other form of apparatus shown.
The connection between one or more of the burner pipes and the branches of the mixing chamber may consist of a thimble or bushing 30 which is fitted tightly in the branch of the casting 10 and projects outwardly to receive the end of the burner pipe 11 as shown in Fig. 1, at a close fit, the flange of the pipe having a hole to receive a pin 31 projecting from the flange of the central casting so that the burner will not turn. This makes a slip connection which permits the burner and its pipe to be disconnected and packed in small compass. As stated, one or more of the burners may be so connected according to the available packing space.
The supply of air thru the inlet 28 may be controlled by a pivot valve or damper 2,9 which can be turned to vary the extent of the inlet opening.
