OIL BURNER.

Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BUCEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and 6 State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and-to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to hydrocarbon burners and it is particularly adapted for burning oil and in order to facilitate combustion, I have provided means for introducing water vapor in the combustible mixture. Ihave also provided means whereby gas may be used in connection with a pilot burner t'ignite the oil and water vapor mixture which of course is combined with an appropriate amount of air. The invention consists of certain novel parts and combination of parts all of which will be specifically referred to hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring now, to the drawings by numerals of reference, i
1 designates a base pan having a truncated conical bottom 2 in the truncated poi'- tion of which is a cylindrical distributor 3 having a to 4 provided with an oil outlet orifice 5 an a gas tip 6, the gas tip is supplied with gas by a pipe 7 so that the gas tip constitutes a pilot burner and the orifice 5 receives an oil pipe 8 which supplies oil to the 5 burner. The distributor 3 is provided with a plurality of circumferential trough shaped flanges 9 10 and 11 thelatter of which is.
part of the truncated portion of the conical bottom 2 and the anges for progressively increasing diameters Afrom the top to the bottom and are provided for the purpose of distributing oil overiiowing through the oriice 5 about the burner. The bottom 2 is provided with a truncated conical distributor casing 12 spaced from the distributor 3 and provided with outlet openings 13 and 14, the former being about midway of the casing and the latter at the base of the casing so that vaporized oil may pass through the opening 13 or 14 to be mixed with air and steam preparatory to being ignited. The top of the casing 12 is also spaced slightly from the distributor 3.and it carries an inverted cup base delector 15 so that the oil burners will be directed downwardly. The casing is surrounded by a cylindrical shroud 16 having inlet openings 17 connected to air inlet openings 18 in the base bv the angular pipes 19 which constitute air ports for supplying air to mix with the vaporized oil, the angular pipes 19 being disposed radially about the axis of the burner to supply air towardthe center. The shroud is provided with a vertical elongated circulating pipe or port 20 so that some of the air can be distributed at the top of the shroud and mix with water vapor. The water vapor is admitted through an elongated vertical pipe 21 having a right angular extension or elbow 22 discharging into a hollow head or chamber 23 provided wit-h a discharge nozzle 24 which discharges in the space between the deflector cap 15 and the top of the shroud 16. The water vapor is provided by admitting water into the pipe 21 through a supply pipe 26 there being an overflow pipe 27 in the bottom of the pipe 21 so thatthe level of the water in the pipe 21 may be controlled. At
the top of the pipe 21 is a hinged relief valve 28 whlch will unseat when the vapor appreciably exceeds atmospheric pressure so that. the vapor can escape to atmosphere. The head 23 is provided withdiametrically oppositely located lugs 2Q and 30 which are adapted to be received in the spaces 31 between the segmental anges 32 and 33 in the locking ring 34 which is also provided with spaced segmental flanges 35. and 36. When the head is to be secured to the shroud the lugs 29 and 30 are dro ped in the spaces 31, at which time the hoo shaped locking lugs 37 and 38 on the top of the shroud are 1n line with the spaces 39 and 40 between the flanges 35 and 36 of the ring. Then the ring is turned slightly so that the lugs 29 and 30 will ride under the flanges 32 and 33, the flanges preferably being in the form of cams and when the ring is turned to cause the lugs 29 and 30 to ride under the flanges 32 and 33, the flanges 35 and 36 ride under the hook shaped lugs 37 and 38, thereby locking the head in place. As previously explained the pilot jet or burner 7 is always supplying a pilot flame for the burners. If the valve (not shown) controlling the supply of oil through pipe 8 is opened, oil will be admitted through the orifice 5 and flow over the distributor on to the flange 9. If a small amount of oil is permitted to flow through pipe 8 the oil will be ignited before it can overflow on to flange 10 or on to flange 11. Air will be supplied through the pipe 17 and when the pipe 21 becomes hot enough some of the vapor formed by the water provided by the pipe 21 will be generated into vapor, discharged through 24 to mix with theH air and oil vapor so that such mixture may be ignited but if the flow of oil through pipe 8 is increased some of it will flow over into the trough shaped flange 10, the vapor being discharged through orifice 13 and when a 'maximum amount of oil is fed through pipe 8, the oil will flow over into the trough shaped flange 11 so vapors will issue from the space surrounding the distributor through the space between the distributor casing .and the distributor proper and through the openings 13 and 14 it is then the maximum flame will be provided and it will be apparent that. the greater the flame the more rapid the oil will be generated into va or so that the amount of vapor combined with the hydrocarbon will be in proportion to the demand.
The device may be easilyconstructed. It will be of rugged construction so that it will not readily warp or distort and it may be easily assembled or disassembled for inspection or repairs. The port 20 will allow part of the air to circulate throu h this port and through the space surrounded by the shroud which will tend to thoroughly co-mingle the various constituents of the mixture.
The pi e 7 is provided with a valve 7 so that the ow of gas for the tip 6 may be controlled, it being understood while I have referred to the t1p 6 as a pilot tip or burner, the gas will be supplied through the tip 6 only during the time it is necessary to start the oil fuel burning, then the valve 7 can be seated because it will not be necessary to burn the gas while the oil is burning. The yoil supply can be controlled by a valve 8.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. An oil burner comprising a base, a cylindrical oil distributor on the`base having channeled circumferential flanges, a ported Y conical distributor casing about the distribi,5oa,ero
utor, a shroud about the casing, air pipes connecting the base to the shroud, an oil pipe for supplying oil to the top of the distributor and a Water vaporizing chamber communica-ting with the top of the shroud.
2. An oil burner comprising a base, a cylindrical oil distributor on the base having spaced circumferential flanges of varying areas, a ported distributor casing about the distributor in spaced relation thereto, a ported `shroud about the casing havin an elongated ported member-provided wit van inlet and outlet communicating with said shroud and means for supplying oil to the topV of the distributor.
3. An oil burner comprising a base, a cylindrical oil distributor on the base having spaced circumferential flanges of varying.
areas, a ported distributor casing about the distributor in spaced relation thereto, a ported shroud about the casin having an elongated ported member provided with an inlet and outlet communicating with said shroud, 'means for supplying oil to the top of the distributor and a deflector cap on the upper end of the distributor casing.
4. An oil burner comprising a base, acylindrical oil distributor on the base having spaced circumferential flanges ofvarying areas, a ported distributor casing about the distributor in spaced relation thereto, aported shroud .about the casing having an elongated ported member provided with an inlet and outlet communicating with said shroud and means for supplying oil to the top of the distributor and means for supplying water vapor to the space within the shroud.
5. An oil burner comprising a. base, a cylindrical oil distributor on the base having spaced circumferential flanges of varying areas, a ported distributor casing about the distributor in spaced relation thereto, aported shroud about the casing gated ported member prov1ded with an inlet and outlet communicating with said shroud and means for supplyin oil to the top of the distributor and means 01' supplying water vapor to the space within the shroud, said means comprising a closed pipe adjacent to the ported casing and discharging into the top of the shroud.
