Be it known that I, TULLY DE STEFANI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hinges and one purpose of the invention is to provide an improved hinge or connecting device particularly adapted for use in connecting the cover to the body of a jar, such as a crushed fruit jar adapted for use in connection with a soda fountain. The principal object of the invention is to. provide means for connecting the cover4 to the body of the jar or other receptacle without perforating either of the connected members. Another object is to provide a connecting device adapted to maintain its grip on the jar by spring pressure. A further object is to provide a one-piece connecting hinge which may be readily connected to or detached from the jar. Other objects relate to various features of construction and arrangement such as will appear more clearly hereinafter.

The nature of the invention will be nnderstood from the following specification taken with the accompanying drawings in which one embodiment is illustrated. In the drawings,

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the top portion of a porcelain jar showing the cover in open position connected to the jar by means of the improved hinge of the present invention, and

Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 with the cover in its closed position.

The invention is illustrated in connection with a porcelain j ar of the kind commonly used for containing crushed fruits or other flavors for use in connection with soda fountains. This jar has a front wall 11, rear wall 12 and side walls 13 forming a receptacle having a rectangular cross section. These walls are curved outwardly adjacent the upper part of the jar to form a rim 14 having an upper Wall 15. This upper wall 15 has a rectangular aperture 16 therethrough for permitting access to the interior of the receptacle, and the thickness of the upper wall 15 is increased around the edge of the aperture 16 by an upwardly exa sheet of metal and is provided around its outer edges with downwardly extending flanges 19 adapted to engage the outer sides of the upwardly extending flange 17 on the jar. On the forward side of the cover the flange 19 is provided vwith a depression 20Y which may be engaged by the fingers in opening the cover, and the wall of this depression is adapted to engage closely the outer surface of the flange 17. The flange 21 along the rear edge of the opening 16, which is formed by the top wall 15 thickened by the upwardly extending flange 17, forms a support for the cover 18. The cover is connected to the flange 21 by means of a hinge .member 22 which is form-ed from a single piece of bronze wire or other metal having considerable resiliency, this metal being preferably nickel silver which will not be acted on by acids of the fruit contained within the ar. This hinge member 22 comprises two U-shaped parts 23, each having an upper arm 24 and a lower arm 25. These arms extend parallel to the flange 21, and the curved extremities of the U-shaped parts 23 are adapted to engage the inner edge of this flange. The outer extremities ol the arms 25 are connected by a resilient member 26 which is bowed upwardly to some extent and adapted to engage the under side of the flange 21. The outer ends of the arms 2% are integrally connected with parts 27 which extend rearwardly in contact with the upper surface of the flange 21 and bead 17. The parts 27 are turned downwardly to engage the outer side of' the bead 17, as shown at 28 in Fig. 2, and these parts are then'bent longitudinally parallel to the bead 17 forming extremities 29 adapted to engage pivotally the cylindrical members 30 which are formed on the rear flange 19a of the cover 18. If desired, the two cylindrical members 30 may be connected by a sleeve 31.

The hinge member 22, being constructed of a single piece of wire, may be readily detached from the coverl by passing the extremities 29 of the wire out of engagement with the cylindrical hubs 30, and when attached to the cover by engagement with these hubs, a connection may be readily made between the cover and the jar by placing the cover in position and pressing the arms 25 downwardly until the resilient connecting member 26 springs into position under the flange 2l of the jar. The cover is thus held in pivotal engagement with the jar without the necessity of forming apern tures through the walls of the jar and without bringing into proximity with the contents of the jar any parts which might be acted on by the acids contained in the crushed fruit. An important advantage of this invention is that the hinge and cover may be wholly detached to permit the cleaning of the jar.

Although one embodiment and one adaptation of the invention has been shown and described for purposes of illustration, it will be understood that the invention may be employed in various other forms without departing from the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. In combination, a vessel having an opening bounded by an inwardly directed flange, a cover mounted over said opening and a resilient member pivoted on said cover and located entirely beneath said cover with parts thereof gripping the upper and lower sides of said flange.

In combination, a vessel having an opening bounded by an inwardly directed flange provided with an upwardly extending shoulder, a cover for said opening and a resilient hinge member pivoted on said cover with parts thereof gripping opposite sides of said shoulder and the upper and lower sides of said flange.

3. In combination, a vessel provided with an opening having an inwardly directed flange along one edge thereof, a shoulder extending upwardly from said flange, a cover mounted over said opening` and a hinge member located beneath said cover and pivoted thereon, said hinge member having parts engaging the outer side of. said shoulder, other parts coacting with the upper side of said fiange, another part engaging the under side of said flange, and resilient members connecting said last named part with the parts engaging the upper side of said flange.

In combination, a vessel having an opening bounded along one edge by an inwardly directed fiange having an upturned extremity, a cover for said opening, a hinge member pivoted on said cover and detachably gripping said flange on said vessel entirely beneath said cover, said hinge member having an upturned part coacting with the outer surface of said shoulder and resiliently connected parts engaging the upper and lower surfaces of said flange.

5. In combination, a supporting flange, a cover, and a connecting hinge, said hinge comprising parts engaging the upper and lower sides of said supporting flange and connected by a U-shaped resilient member.

6. In combination, a supporting flange, a cover, U-shaped members having transversely extending parts adapted to overlie said supporting flange and to be connected to said cover, and means connecting said U-shaped members and adapted to engage the under side of said supporting flange.

7. In combination, a supporting flange, a cover, and a one-piece hinge member bent to form two U-shaped parts lying parallel to the edge of said flange with their open ends directed away from each other, the lower arms of said U-shaped members being connected by a part adapted to engage the under side of said flange, the upper arms of said U-shaped members terminating in transversely extending parts adapted to contact with the upper side of said flange, said transversely extending parts terminating in members lying parallel to said U-shaped members and adapted to form pivotal engagements with said cover.
