Description

Dec. 15, l925 l.. sAMuELs SEPARABLE BUTTON Filed March V. 1924 Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
UNITED 'STATES LESSER SAMUELS,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEPARABLE BUTTON.
Application filed March 7, 1924. Serial No. 697,490.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I', Iinssnn SAMUELS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York `and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Separable Buttons7 of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsv in separable buttons and pertains more especially to buttons of the double type.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved means for latching the parts together and to also provide novel and improved .means for assembling the parts of'tliemale and female members of the button.
The invention has still further and other objects which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention partly broken away and in section;
Figure 2, is a. 'section on line 2-*2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention the male member is formed with an outer head 1, and a hollow post 2 of approximately oval cross-section, the inner end of the post being flared to form an outwardly extending flange 3. A plate i is seated on the flange 3 and has a stem 5 provided with a rounded head 5 the stem extending outwardly from the plate i and through an opening provided therefor in an outer plate 6, the peripheral edge of the latter being rolled or spun at 7 over` onto the flange 3 thereby to clamp the plate 4 to and against the iange 3.
The female member includes an outer head 8 having a hollow post 9 corresponding to the post 2, the outer end of the post be ing flanged at 10, similar to the flange 3 of the female member. A plate 11 engages against the liange 10 and has a iange- 19 on its periphery forming a rim, the flange 19 being engaged by a plate 11, the peripheral edge 20 of which latter is rolled or curled over the fiange or rim 19 and the flange 10. Slots 21 are formed in the flanges 19 and 20, (Figure 2) and receives therein arms 13 of a pair of clamping members 12. The arms 13 are guided by the slot-s 2l in A fiat U-shaped spring 16 is mounted lwithin the hollow post 9 and has fingers 17 formed integral with the free ends of its legs, which fingers extend outwardly in opposite directions (Fig. 2) and through openings 18 provided in the plate 11 and engage the respective clamping members 12 on opposite sides of the jaws thereof so as to normally tension the jaws 15 thereof to move toward each other thereby to grip the stem 5. The spring 16 is cut-out at 22 to receive the head 5.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the spring is housed by the hollow post and the clamping members by the base of the female member, the parts being compactly assembled. In each instance, i. e., the male and female members, all soldering operations. in connection of the respective parts are eliminated.
While the spring eXerts tension on the members 12 to urge same away from each other, it will be noted that the jaws 15 are urged towards each other, thejaws being disposed so that same are received in the central portion of the respective opposed member, thus providing a compact assemblage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by `Let ters Patent is 1. In a separable button, a male member having a stem and a head therein, a female member having a head, a hollow post Y flanged outwardly, a plate engaged against the flange and having a slotted' rim, a pair of clamping members having arms slidable in said slots of the rim and having relatively opposed jaws to grip the stem of said head of the male member therebetween, a plate engaged with said rim and over the clamping members and having its edge rolled over the rim and flange of the post and slotted to receive said arms, and a flat U-shaped spring in the hollow post formed independent of the clamping members and having lingers at each end thereof, the fingers extending outwardly in opposite directions and being engaged with the respective clamping members on opposite sides of the jaws to tension the latter in a direction toward each other.
2. In a separable button, a male member having a stem and head thereon a female member having a hollow post and a slotted hollow base, a pair of opposed clamping members in the hollow base having jaws to engage the stem, means to guide the members, and a flat U-shaped spring in the post engaged with each of the members on opposite sides of the jaws thereof to tension the latter so as to cause same to grip the stem on opposite sides thereof.
3. In a separable button, a male member having a stein and head thereon. a female member having a pair of opposed clamping members with open parts, a jaw carried by each member and received in the open part of the respective opposed member and spring means interposed between the members to tension same outwardly away from each other thereby to tension the jaws in a direction towards each other.
4:. In a separable button, a male member having a stem and head thereon, a female member having a pair of opposed clamping members with open parts, a jaw carried by each member and received in the open part of the respective opposed member, and a single U-shaped spring having its legs engaged with each of the members to tension same away from each other to thereby tension the jaws in a direction towards each other.
5. In a separable button, a male member having a stem and a head thereon, a female member, opposed clamping members for the stem in the female member' having inner spaced sides, and a single U-shaped spring having its ends disposed in said space between the clamping member sides and engaged with each of the sides on opposite sides of the stem.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
