Description
1 ARNOLD.
Shuttep-Workers.
Patented Nov. 3,1874.
Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- JOHN ARNOLD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-WORKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,524, dated November 3, 1874 application filed October 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ARNOLD, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Blind Closers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref erence being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to the ordinary springhook shutter-fastening; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for releasing the fastening from the hook in the wall and for closing the shutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, showing my device attached to a shutter; Fig. 2, a bottomside'up view; Fig. 3, a side elevation, with the side piece removed; and Fig. 4, a perspective of the device complete.
A represents a shutter with an ordinary spring-hook fastening, B. This fastening is constructed in the usual manner with one hook on each side of the. shutter. On the inner side of the shutter A is secured a box or case, 0, having a slot or opening on its under side along the inner edge. D represents an L-shaped lever, the vertical part of which extends up through the slot or opening mentioned into the box, and is, within said box,
provided with a collar or flange, a, to prevent its coming out. The upper end of the lever D bears against a shoulder, 12, in the top of the box. 01 represents a flat spring, one end of which is fastened to the box and the other end coiled around and fastened to the vertical arm of thelever D. This lever has two motions: First, it can be drawn straight inward, and, second, it can be thrown outward, on a circle; and from both it is thrown back to its original position by the spring d, which, by its peculiar position within the box, as shown, allows of both of these movements of the lever. The end of the lever D is formed with a handle, D, which is bent slightly outward, so as to be easily taken hold of. Theinner hook of the fastening B is, by a rod or wire, h, connected with the vertical arm of the lever D immediately below the box or case 0.
The operation of this device is as follows:-
The shutter being thrown open and fastened back to the wall, when it is desired to close the shutter, it is only necessary to take hold of the handle D and pull the lever D inward, when the fastening is at once released from the hook in the wall, and by continuing to pull on the lever the shutter will commence to turn on its hinges. As the shutter turns the lever must ,be thrown outward, in order to get sufficient leverage to close the shutter. As soon as the pressure is removed from the lever the spring 01 at once throws it back to its proper position again.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the box or case 0, L- shaped lever D, with handle D, and the spring d, the lever being by a rod or wire h connected with the shutter-fastening B, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ARNOLD.
