Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Haunntn, a citizen of the United States, resident of Tower Hill. in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Post Supports for Rural-Route Mail Boxes; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertams to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention has relation to posts for rural mail boxes, having for an object to provide an improved means for mounting the box thereon adapted to admit of the box being turned half way around prior to placing the mail therein or in removing the mail therefrom, thereby avoiding the necessity of going out in the muddy road or ditch, common on rural routes.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention the numeral 1 designates the post of iron piping, having a suitable flanged base to maintain it securely in position in the ground, the upper end of the post having threaded therein at 2, a short length of pipe 3, whereon is revolubly mounted an outer short length of pipe 4:, of the same diameter as that of the post and carrying the mail box as will be explained.

The mail box 5 overlies the post 1 and is supported from the outer tubular carrier or pipe 4. by means of irons 6, two in number and bolted at the ends thereof at T to the said box, said irons being clamped to said carrier or pipe 4: by bolts 8 connecting the irons, braces 9 being provided for the latter and connecting the upwardly extending diverging arms of each iron 6, which is of strap nature, each strap iron (3 having two arms 6, divergent relative to each other, the opposite arms 6 of opposite irons 6 icing also divergent relative to each other, and he braces 9, each connecting the two arms of each strap iron, having also each two arms 9 extendingoutwardly from the post i in a divergent manner and eontacting at 10 centrally thereof with said post whereby side sway of the said irons relative to the post is prevented.

Means are provided to hold the mail box in either of two opposite positions consisting of a V-form seat 11 in the top of the post 1, wherein fits a V-form tongue or extension 12 of the tubular carrier or pipe 4 for said box, the weight of the parts holding this engagement, but admitting of the box being raised with its strap iron supports and tubular carrier or pipe 4 upon pipe 3 to disengage said tongue from said seat or notch, whereupon the box may be turned half way around upon pipe 3 and released,the

weight of the parts causing the engagement of said tongue or extension with said seat to be again effected and held.

The pivot pipe 3 at the top of the post has its threaded engagement with the post fixed by means of a cross pin 13, engaging aligned perforations of said postand of said pivot pipe, and having upturned free ends 14:, thereby providing supports for packages too large for admission into the mail box.

The pivot pipe 3 at the upper end of the post is provided with a cap 15 threaded thereon and at its lower edge spaced at 16 from the upper edge of the pipe 4 to admit of the disengagement of tongue or extension 12 of the latter from seat 11, but preventing too great play and also preventing removal of the tubular carrier pipe 4 and the box from the post 1.

I claim In a post support for-mural route mail boxes, at post having an upper V-form seat and a reduced upper end above said seat, a sleeve revolubly and slidably mounted upon said reduced upper end and having a lower V-form extension engaging said seat, means carried by said sleeve for supporting a mail box comprising opposite strap irons having approximated lower ends having clamp bolt connections and upwardly extending arms bolted at their upper ends to said box, the said arms of each strap iron being divergent relative to each other and the arms of the opposite strap irons beingalso divergent relative to eachother, each strap iron-having a brace connecting the arms thereof and contacting centrally With said sleeve to prevent side sway of the said box, and a cap for said reduced upper end spaced from the upper end of said sleeve the latter being vertically movable upon said reduced upper end to disengage said extension fronrsaid seat and l revoluble-to admit of reengagement of said extension and seat in a reversed position of said box.
